Responsible tourism: Self guided walking vacation in Turkey

Environment

This walking vacation offers you the opportunity to stay in the heart of a beautiful Turkish village in an old stone cottage. The cottage has been restored using locally produced, recyclable materials to blend in with the village architecture.

We recycle our waste to make compost and help feed the chickens. We keep chickens and ducks for free range eggs and meat. We encourage bird life in the garden and have bird boxes. We leave some areas uncut to preserve wild flowers. We also recycle our waste into glass, burnable and organic to make compost for the garden and encourage our guests to do so. We use energy saving light bulbs and turn off all electrical appliances to save energy.

We are lucky to have a mountain stream running through the garden which we take care to keep clean. We have natural spring water and solar panels for heating the showers in both of the bathrooms. We use home made olive oil soap in the guest rooms. We try and promote the local culture and discourage inappropriate development and are in contact with tour operators that respect the environment.

Community

The cottage was converted using local craftsmen which benefits the community financially. The village carpenter also made some of the furniture. You will be able to get to know the friendly local people and see how they live. We collaborate with local people to organise visits to out of the way places.

All guests are encouraged to use local shops and markets and eat in the trout restaurants in the village. The vacation is popular with the local community as it offers an opportunity to trade in Spring and Autumn that are off peak periods. It is our policy to use local produce. We grow organic vegetables and have grapevines, figs, olives, quince and a wide variety of fruit trees.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The location of the cottage is delightful. We could sit on the balcony overlooking the hills to the sea and pick delicious sweet grapes from the vines surrounding us. Every night we ate at the small local restaurants which were a short walk away and everyone was so friendly.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Deborah was a great host and helped us with lifts into Kalkan or to the nearest dolmus but others might prefer to have a car.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, I felt that we were supporting the local community.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

We loved the area, the people and the history and want to come back and explore further.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Lurkey Turkey! The stand out stay of the menagerie of dogs, cats, ducks, chickens, etc. lurkey was also the not so proud father of approx 9 hatchlings just before we left. The views, the ambience and the rushing streams of water, the locals, the fish restaurants, etc. and the library of books.......

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

The Lycian way is a couple of very steep Kms away so not really an option unless you have a car. Deborah did offer to drive us and pick us up as she did for our trip to local towns and to and from the bus station. It was a bit chilly when we were there but the fire was very smoky- did not draw well- so the room became very smoky.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We had a lovely meal at the local fish restaurant- we were their only customers for the day- a bit sad. We went to the local markets. The shopkeepers were very friendly. We walked to most places and took our plastic bags when shopping. The locals are very free with giving you bags.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Enjoyed our week. Deborah is a very interesting person and the house is full of her beautiful paintings and a collection from Mexico. Much more pleasant than staying in one of the touristy towns. Certainly a great way to see the locals in action away from the hordes of tourists.

Read the operator's response here:

Sorry about the smokey wood burner! I wish you had told me as I didnít realize until I discovered the metal pipe needed cleaning after the winter. It usually works well and I bought it this winter as it is wrought iron and brick and not the usual tin variety!
The steep Lycian Way walk you mention I think is the one that goes to Kas. Just for the record, the Lycian Way going down to Xanthos crosses the Islamlar Road 2K down the road and there is a loop from Akbel to Patara that is quite flat.
