Teach English in the Galapagos Islands

Volunteer travel - what's it all about?
Are you looking for an adventurous trip with a purpose, or on a gap year or career break? If you want to make a difference in some of the world’s most important conservation areas - and in community projects - then volunteer trips are for you! Volunteers tend to have a sense of adventure, and come from a range of different backgrounds and from all over the world.
Edward Abbey said 'sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul'.

How this vacation makes a difference

Environment

When travelers are in ecologically sensitive areas like the Galapagos it is essential that they minimize waste and recycle. Guides will make the travelers aware of their impact by telling them the adverse effect that littering can leave on the local environment, but at the same time it is also the responsibility of each individual traveler to be culpable for their own actions.

In mainland Ecuador, we work with different rehabilitation centres that work on the rehabilitation of injured animals and illegal pets. We also work with conservation projects throughout the Galapagos that focus on restoring native species and conserving the current state of the islands. Through our programs, our volunteers are encouraged to participate in their efforts. They actively participate in the activities of these foundations and a portion of their program fees goes directly towards operating finances of these projects.

In our office we try to maintain environmental consciousness by recycling, limiting our water usage and using energy efficient light bulbs. We also try to limit unnecessary waste by using electronic documentation when possible, rather than paper documents.

Community

This program enables you to become a responsible tourist mainly because the revenue you will leave during your trip will go to the local community in the islands, as you will be staying there and having meals there, as well as using local guides and facilities. This is quite different from traveling on a cruise, where most of the revenue goes to companies based on the mainland or internationally. With this, you help the community to develop and you get a chance to meet them, learn how they live and understand all the problems they are facing in the islands. We work with family run hostels, especially in Isabella where you will get a chance to meet Adolfo and their grand kids, his wife Petita will sit and talk to you during meal times, sharing with you their stories.

You will be reinforcing the teaching of English language to the kids in the islands, which is extremely important to them. Considering the number of tourists the islands receive and by learning English they will be prepared to be local qualified guides and keep the revenues in the islands for its development.

We employ local staff, all from Quito or Ecuador. Most have attended local universities and new staff are trained accordingly. We have partnerships with local hostels and hotels. We work in contact with local producers to try to limit our carbon footprint.

Many of our programs directly involve community members. Whether it may be from teaching football to local youths, to teaching English to indigenous children or helping to build homes for needy families, we are always community oriented. We do encourage our participants to take public transportation or walk, most find it refreshing and easy to use. There are three main public transportation systems in Quito: the Ecovia, the trolley and the bus system. We inform all of our participants about these services.

When we do not provide food services to our participants and encourage them to eat at local restaurants. There is a great number of local restaurants that offer an incredible variety of food at affordable prices. Travelers get to experience new cuisine and this money goes directly to the local community. We have informative information sessions before the travelers begin their program.

Teach English in the Galapagos Islands

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

All of it! The amazing people we met, the fantastic kids that were so enthusiastic in lessons, the little goodbye poems and cards they made us to say goodbye, the wonderful trips we took on the weekends to get up close and personal with the wildlife, the amazing feeling of walking down into town and realising we were an active, contributing part of society on the Islands... I could go on for days talking about how fantastic it was!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

1. Learn Spanish! Although when I booked it didn't say you needed to speak a certain level of Spanish, to do the English teaching placement it really is necessary to have conversational Spanish - at the very least. The teachers in the school (including the English teacher!) don't really speak any English. I was lucky that other volunteers there at the same time could translate for me. It is a great experience though - and great motivation to improve your Spanish before you go!

2. It's Santa Cruz not Isabela. They say on the website that the placement will be in a school on Isabela. Mine wasn't, it was a school in Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz. This was great for me (I think Isabela would have been a bit too quiet), but it's worth mentioning as any trips to the great natural attractions of Isabela need to be done on weekends (I recommend taking a 2 or 3 day trip to do it justice - it's a fabulous place!)

3. Visit Los Tunneles. Top trip to do: Visit Los Tunneles (off Isabela island) for the greatest snorkelling experience you will ever have - we saw seahorses, giant manta rays and swam with penguins, sealions, turtles, rays and white tip reef sharks as well as amazing fish! Stunning!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Absolutely. Most people do Galapagos by boat where no benefit is felt by islanders (as most boats are owned by international companies and stocked from the mainland). On this trip you are not only contributing directly by teaching children in the local community but living and eating on the island so ensuring your tourist dollar goes directly to the islanders. We also got chance to help local craftspeople with their English and so help them better market their goods to visiting tourists from the boats.

The operator of this experience also gave an excellent orientation meeting at the start of the trip in Quito. This included a talk on the environment by a biodiversity expert. Although this was a little too technical for me at times it was a brilliant way to introduce the bigger issues facing Galapagos and advise us how best to minimise any negative impact of us being there, as well a maximise our positive impact. It was a fascinating and important part of the package that reassured me that the operator was in it for all the right reasons.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

An amazing experience. Value for money as well as contributing than the usual tourist to this wonderful archipelago. Who knows how much longer we'll be able to visit (they have to do something to control numbers of tourists soon to help preserve the islands). Go while you still can!
