Belize wildlife tour

This vacation is operated by a wildlife specialist
Typically trips are expertly guided by a leading specialist with a good knowledge of the area to be visited. Inevitably, birds, plants and mammals are the main focus of attention however, the aim will be to incorporate all other aspects of the natural world in an attempt to be as broad-minded as possible. A local guide may often accompany trips.

How this vacation makes a difference

Environment

As well as supporting organisations, through direct donations, which run environmental projects this trip also supports research in jaguar density, macaw monitoring and river turtle conservation. Furthermore the lodges we use source food from their own organic gardens, use biodegradable detergents for laundry, and one of them has self-sustaining power through their own hydro-electric plan. They also have their own reforestation programme to offset carbon dioxide release.

We also use expert naturalist guides and conservationists who educate the tourists in how to respect nature and the wildlife they may come across.

Friends for Conservation and Development are a Belizean non-profit, non-governmental organisation whose primary goal is to motivate the public to protect the environment through conservation awareness, while enhancing the development of the human resource. Since its establishment in 1999, FCD has had significant achievements in public education and environmental awareness, protected areas co-management, community support programmes, monitoring, research, policy recommendation and bi-national cooperation related to the Chiquibul National Park.

Southern Environmental Association of Belize (SEABelize) is a Belizean based, non-governmental organisation dedicated to the conservation and preservation of the country’s natural treasures. SEABelize co-manages a number of marine parks, including Laughing Bird Caye National Park. Their motto is: ‘Protecting our natural resources by developing our human resources’.

Our travel partners, accommodation, service providers and ground agents are all carefully chosen to ensure their commitment to the environment, most being quality, family owned businesses – reflecting the unique character of the places, the abiding hospitality of its people and the remarkable spirit of its wilderness.

To mitigate the carbon dioxide released into the high atmosphere through your air travel we are giving £10 per client who books flights with us to Rainforest Concern. Rainforests have a central role to play in the slowing of climate change and yet we are removing forests from the planet at a faster rate than they can grow back. It is thus axiomatic to try and preserve the forests that we have rather than replanting.

Community

In 2007 we celebrated 10 years of spectacular achievement as pioneers in the field of nature travel. As we approach our 15th birthday, our commitment to the principle of ‘conservation travel to protect’ remains steadfast.

We have raised significant funds in support of the world’s leading wildlife and conservation agencies, researchers and experts, and increased awareness of travel and conservation through newsletters, lectures and consistent media coverage. Furthermore, we have voluntarily spearheaded collective action campaigns such as Travel Operators for Tigers in South Asia.

The lodges we use, and our partners, on this trip sponsor a number of local students through school. They also donate every month to a local non-profit organisation which helps the poor and needy and develops positive workshops geared towards children as well as contribute to a clinic in Placencia. In addition they assist in the advancement of local sports in both Placencia and San Ignacio.

Part of the cost of the tour is passed on as a donation to two local non profit organisations which work on various environmental and social programmes including education and the development of the country’s human development.

Story of the vacation provider

Passionate animal-lover Jules was galloping on a horse across the plains of Mongolia when he had the idea to set up a travel company which used tourism to raise funds and awareness of the plight of endangered animals. He worked with the Orangutan Foundation in Borneo to put together one of his first trips and today has a portfolio of incredible vacations that work with leading authorities on wildlife and contribute toward conservation. All staff share his ethos of ‘travel to protect’ and believe responsible tourism can be an effective tool if it helps local people realise the economic potential of their natural habitats.
