Responsible tourism: Nile cruise & cultural vacation, Egypt

Even though this is a short visit to Egypt, there will still be a few activities planned in the program to allow the traveler to understand more about the country, the people and their culture.

All of the services in the program are provided by various Egyptian suppliers, most of them young Egyptian entrepreneurs who decided to control their own future rather than just wait for the governmentís employment.

A few months ago we joined a training program with one of the Faculties of Tourism & Travel Management and we offer the newly graduated staff a chance to be trained as guides and representatives. Two of them have already joined our team.

Since we believe that our travelers should also have a positive impact on the communities they visit, recommendations will be given out to each traveler on how to act around the different sites visited, and how to behave around the small local communities they will visit.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The most memorable part of the vacation was the visits to the ancient Egyptian pyramids, tombs and temples. The tour guides provided historical background and information on the sights to stimulate our imagination and awe. Ahmed, our guide in Luxor and Aswan was knowledgeable, answered all our questions and patiently taught us to read hieroglyphics carved in the temples. I especially appreciated that he got my two teenage children involved during the tour. Thanks to Ahmed - my kids brought home the most precious souvenirs from Egypt - golden sands from the Valley of the Kings and the High Dam.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Tips: Do your research before booking - sights, hotels, etc. Experience the sleeper train to Aswan or Luxor if you plan on be taking the Nile cruise. Trust Gateway Egypt to have your best interest in mind - hotels, cruises, and PRICE. Choose them to be your host in Egypt.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Thanks to this operator, my vacation was very enjoyable. My family didn't have to worry about anything from the moment we landed in Cairo. There was always someone to meet us at every port. A private comfortable car was provided for our entire tour. The operator booked us extremely comfortable accommodations with Grand Pyramids Hotel and the Vacation Inn in Cairo and Crown Emperor Cruise Ship at the best price and provided above and beyond service (I negotiated with 5 other tour operators). Finally - My family wish to recognize the operator for providing the best customer service ever. When our flight from Cairo to London was cancelled on Feb 3 and again on Feb 4 due to snow in London, they alerted us, helped us check-in to Novetel near the airport, and took us to airport at 5:30am to help us re-book. Thank-you - Basem and Hamel for your continuous help when we were stranded in Cairo for 2 days. We highly recommend you to host anyone who wish a vacation in Egypt.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

My most memorable part of my vacation was my visit to The Pyramids of Giza, Abu Simbel and Karnak Temple. Part of the reason I consider my entire trip memorable is because of my tour guides. Their knowledge was amazing and I had both of them all to myself since I was traveling alone. They taught me not just about the monuments, but about the culture and country of Egypt.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Specify what you want, but be open to suggestions. After arriving in Egypt I added four additional items to my itinerary because of the advice of my guide.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Excellent. Truly enjoyable and truly outstanding.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Too many things to pick out! I think the Pyramids at Giza and the paintings in the tomb of Ramses I, or perhaps it was the gold mask of Tutankamun, or was it the statue of Ramses II at Memphis... it was always a jaw-dropping moment at each place we visited.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Go prepared to be amazed and don't worry about being left without help and assistance. This operator was fantastic - the organisation from the moment we stepped off the plane was like clockwork; we were whisked through the airport and onto our hotel with the most amazing efficiency (matched only on the way home!). Follow your guide's advice - if they say to follow a certain route through the bazaars - follow it!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes - we were guided to local restaurants and factories as well as using lots of local facilities. The Nubian restaurant was fantastic on our last day in Aswan and the felucca ride was extremely atmospheric with the sailor singing and drumming for us.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Incredible - we were a mixed age group (20 - 45) with a range of different interests, but the vacation managed to ensure that everyone had the most wonderful time and got different things out of it. It has certainly exceeded any expectations that we had and cannot wait to return to see more!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The trip in the hot air ballon to see the sunrise over Luxor was fantastic and the boat journey through the islands below Aswan at sunset was incredible. You could almost feel that you were back 5000 years ago. The whole vacation was just perfect.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Drink plenty of water. Try to keep as much small note money as possible to pay the tips to porters, waiters etc. Take the good advice of your guides and leave your ideas of European living at home.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, it was good to go to the local restaurants and shop in the non 'tourist' shops.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was excellent. We were looked after by the company's reps and guides from the moment we arrived until the moment we departed. I cannot rate the service of the company highly enough. I would recommend it to anyone who wanted to travel to Egypt.

It is a pleasure to give feedback on such a great vacation!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

It is difficult to say which part was the best, the temples are awe-inspiring, the tombs incredible and the towns and cities and the journey on the Nile, just fantastic! Hoewever, we do have to mention the local travel company and their perfect and considierate organisation - they made the vacation fantastic, we had nothing to worry about, everything was well orgnaised and appropriate to our needs!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be prepared to be amazed, to take lots of photographs and to have a great time! Take good walking shoes, but if you not like confined spaces and steep slopes give the "inside the pyrmaid" a miss! and take lots of small Egyptian money ....everyone expects payment!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes

4. Any other comments?

We have had a wonderful vacation with this operator. We saw everything, and yet did not feel too rushed or tired. The itinerary was superb, and the company was marvellous. We were looked after from the moment we arrived at Cairo airport.

We stayed in a very comfortable hotel in Cairo, had a very pleasant and knowledgeable guide and saw all the sights! The sleeper train to Aswan was comfortable, and again we were very well looked after. The Nile cruiser was luxurious and the food was very good. I canít' think of a favourite moment- there were so many!

We were glad that the vacation was run by an Egyptian company, so they will benefit from our visit, and it was good to talk to Egyptian people about their country. The whole vacation was organised so well, with information about clothing, temperature, money etc, sent to us before we left and we feel that the whole vacation couldn't have been bettered. We are recommending it to all our friends!
