How this vacation makes a difference

Tanzania is a great country to visit and indeed it receives thousands of people each year that come to marvel at the country’s vast game reserves, snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro and the Masai herdsmen. However, how many of these are able to return home knowing that they’ve really made a difference to the local people?

All too often parents cannot afford to take care of their children, especially if they are faced with a combination of poverty and HIV/AIDS. This is the reason why there are so many street children and orphans in Africa.

There are a number of projects in the Moshi area that need your assistance. Projects vary from children with disabilities, children whose parents cannot afford to care for them, street children and orphans. Lack of education, culture and poverty create a combination of problems that face the youth of Tanzania. The projects within this project aim to help Tanzania’s future – its children through care, education, counselling and entertainment. By assisting at these projects you are helping to educate and entertain children who may not otherwise have received any care whatsoever.

Your role at the centre will be to provide a range of skills and activities, depending on your experience. There will invariably be an element of teaching, to children and adults making learning as fun and interactive as possible. There may also be further opportunities to really help other people within the community such as adult Masaii or womens groups which will be a fantastic cultural experience, take classes with children who are struggling with their morning studies, conservation projects or even football practice with the local teams!

Through this project you have the ability to make a tangible and long lasting contribution to the lives of the children who will grow up and steer Tanzania’s future. Poverty may be deep rooted in Tanzania but with the commitment of willing volunteers working in partnership with local people it is escapable.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Meeting such a wide variety of people, both on the project and who were also volunteering in projects.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Think about the clothes you will need (cover shoulders whilst on projects) and what you're happy to leave behind (we left lots of cheap T-shirts behind and replaced with souvenirs). Also, make sure you come with an open mind and be willing to try out and help wherever is necessary.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I feel I helped both the children on my project enjoy themselves, and also give the carers a break, having a knock-on effect on the children.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Overall it was an amazing experience. I think everyone should do this at least once as it's a real eye-opener. And coming back you really appreciate the small things in life.
