Syria vacation, on the road to Damascus

Small group adventure vacation
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travelers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are traveling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travelers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places.

How this vacation makes a difference

As a company we aim to encourage interaction with local communities while showing respect for local culture, beliefs and traditions, as well as the importance of respecting the natural surroundings in order to protect places for generations to come. This helps break down cultural barriers and fosters a spirit of mutual respect and understanding.

All accommodation is locally owned and in which you experience great food, most of which is sourced locally. This not only provides direct employment within the hotel, but also has the effect of percolating money beyond to small businesses that supply the hotel and in this way money is spread throughout the region we visit. Our Tour Leaders are trained by us in the importance of responsible tourism with guidance given on how they can make a difference.

In addition to hoteliers a large number of people benefit from this trip, from restaurateurs to local guides, bus drivers and our local handling agent's staff. This means that unlike a more conventional vacation where you stay in just one place the money we spend contributes towards generating an income for a great number of people. In addition we specify travel by small charter bus, not large coach, thus reducing our impact on the environment. Entrance fees paid contribute towards ongoing maintenance at archaeological sites as well as helping to pay for site staff.

As well as the above, we support a variety of charities and projects worldwide which support vulnerable communities and habitats including Friends of Conservation, Hope Worldwide and Send A Cow. We are also actively engaged with UK travel industry bodies which promote best practice in responsible tourism, such as Tourism Concern, The Travel Foundation and AITO. Our commitment to responsible tourism is not limited to our overseas operation and we have measures to ensure our UK office operates according to our responsible tourism policy. Carbon offsets for all flights booked with us are included in the tour cost.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Near Mari we had a tyre blow out on the bus and had to stop to get it fixed. Within minutes the whole village had turned out to see what was going on and wanted photos taking and to talk to us. We were only 10 miles from the Iraq boarder but the people could not have been any more friendly. In some ways it was the high spot of the vacation. The other major thing was Palmyra by sunrise -absolutely stunning!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Don’t over pack, don’t miss the early morning camel ride to the Palmyra ruins for sunrise. Talk to the local people they want to practice their English and are really keen to talk to you.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes local cafes and guides were used and small locally run hotels.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Best ever!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The whole country is amazing, the hospitality was wonderful. Damascus Palmyra and Aleppo are interesting.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Take mosquito repellent and bite sting relief as I got bitten in hotel rooms almost every night. I was told when I booked that mosquitoes are not a problem, but for some people they were. I ended up with at least 10 bites, which were not pleasant experience. I did not get bitten outside at all, which seems to suggest that the hotels we used were not spraying any repellent in the rooms. Be prepared to live out of a suitcase as we covered a huge area driving.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The operator uses small family run hotels so yes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

I requested a quiet room as was unable to sleep for the 1st 3 nights, the tour leader seemed to think I was a problem and only when I insisted did he ask the hotel. He was doing his best, but did not realise that each person is different and some are more sensitive to noise.
