Cycling & trekking in Borneo

How this vacation makes a difference

Global adventures start with a local perspective - that's our philosophy.

Whether abroad, or just as importantly at home, the start point is the same; how to get the most enjoyable vacation for our customers while benefiting the local people, economy and respecting their environment and their culture.

In our biking and trekking trip in Borneo we digress from the normal tourist trails to experience the variety and culture of this country through visiting remote villages and communities.

Tham, our local guide in Borneo and creator of ‘Ecotourism on pedals’ has over 15 years experience in guiding trips around his native country and works closely with local communities committed to sustainable tourism development. During the trip he will share with you his local knowledge of the area to help increase the awareness of the culture and history of Borneo.

Throughout the trip we stay in a variety of accommodation including bamboo lodges, a mountain refuge, a night camping and Rungus longhouses. This choice of accommodation reflects the diversity of this country and enables us to learn about the way of life of the local communities, such as the Rungus.

During the trip we learn about the history of the country; we make a tour of a tea factory, visit the end point of the WW2 death marches in Ranau. Using a variety of transportation, such as the North Borneo Jungle Railway and Canoes, we reach remote villages and spend an afternoon learning about the fauna and flora of the jungle. Our trip ends with the option of visiting the Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary, 43 sq km of protected land at the edge of the Kabili Sepilok forest reserve, with the aim of rehabilitating orphan Orang Utans.

For all our trips we off-set emissions for staff and guide flights, office energy and vehicle usage and recycle our office waste. We offer all our customers with the opportunity to off-set their emission for flights.

Story of the vacation provider

Having stayed in touch since primary school, Andy and Paul decided to cycle around South America in 1994. Andy was a keen cyclist but Paul hadn’t been on a bike since doing his paper round. They didn’t have an itinerary and used military maps to navigate through the desert. They had so much fun and met such amazing people that they agreed to set up a cycling tour company together. Andy says their trips create a flexible and intimate way to travel and absorb the local culture and, whats more, you never forget how to cycle – it’s just like riding a bike!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The hospitality of the local people.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Make sure you are up to climbing the mountain as it is achievable but tough.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes to local people who had set up ventures on their own initiative such as the Jungle camp but environmentally it is a disaster with all the trucks in support and flying internally.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

9/10.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Too many to pick one, the whole vacation was memorable. Best bits include;

- amazing scenery from the beaches to virgin rainforest
- sleeping in the jungle
- varied and interesting rides
- riding through paddy fields
- fireflies on the night river safari
- orangutans
- climbing Kinabalu
- the people (from the friendly locals, fellow travelers & the guides)

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Train for the descent off Mt Kinabalu - my legs are still sore after 4 days! I did some moderate training before I left which was adequate. It was only the walk off Kinabalu which really hurt. Body wipes come in handy after a muddy / sweaty ride. Have a massage at the Eurocafe on the waterfront in KK when you finish the vacation.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

We didn't see any tourists until we got to Kinabalu National park so I felt that we were really putting money to the local community.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

One of the best vacations I have been on. The itinerary was really well designed and the vacation was well organised. We really got off the tourist map and saw some amazing sights. The riding was excellent and every day was different.
