How this vacation makes a difference

Panama is a proud nation and one that respects its indigenous peoples. Our tours include a stay on the San Blas Islands. These islands are an autonomous region, controlled and governed by Kuna Indians.

The Indians determination to protect their heritage and environment lead to the Panamanian Government giving them the authority to form a "comarca" (Autonomous Territory) of San Blas, where an indigenous, independent congress still rules. No non Kuna people are allowed to settle here and the only hotels are Kuna run. The Kuna are fishermen; however, they also cultivate coconut, corn, rice, cocoa and yucca. Kuna women spend hours stitching the colorful reverse-appliqué cotton "molas" which you are able buy. By taking this tour you know that the money you spend is going directly to the Kuna people to help preserve their way of life.

Our tours also work closely with guides from the National Association for the Conservation of Nature, one of the regions most efficient and respected conservation organisations. Your participation on the tour supports the excellent work that this organisation is doing in the protection of Panama’s amazing abundance of flora and fauna.

We only employ local staff and unlike many operators we believe that to send a foreign Tour Leader along to accompany your trip is an unnecessary burden on your wallet and our carbon footprint. We believe that locals know best. Our local operators only use locally owned accommodation. This means your money stays in the area to benefit the local community. When possible we use local transport, (i.e. rail or bus) and we always use local restaurants, markets and shops. In doing this your travels are supporting and encouraging the development of local services.

We only work with operators who are as committed as we are to putting something back into the communities we visit. This may include giving a percentage of the profits from each tour to a foundation to help street children or local conservation projects. Furthermore, in order to allow our clients to make an informed decision on where a greater proportion of their money should be spent, we avoid including pre-paid full board meals where possible. Local restaurants and cafes then benefit.

Our groups average only six clients, and many tours operate on a private basis with just two travelers. This has much less impact when traveling through rural areas, reducing our environmental and social affects. Finally, to emphasis our commitment to Responsible Tourism all clients will receive a copy of our Travelers Code of Conduct with their travel documents.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Impossible to say as there were so many wonderful wildlife experiences! Seeing colourful Mannikins (birds) doing their courtship dances was amazing, having seen this only on television before, and washing in rivers during the wild camping days was great too. Seeing a sky full of stars without any city lights to disturb, and watching click beetles/fireflys each night light up the surrounding trees was also wonderful. Finally, the feeling that we were some of the very few other travelers who undertook that trek (the Darien explorer trek), following a seldom used path originally made in the 1800's to transport gold out of the rainforest was also very special. A huge thank you to Ivan Hoyes, our Panamanian guide.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Go and enjoy! Be prepared NOT for mosquitoes (there are none!) but do be prepared for tics and 'orrible little critters (well, mites actually) called chiggers which itch like crazy. But don't let this put you off as this trek is one of a kind.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, definitely minimised impact on environment as we mostly wild camped with freshly dug pit latrines later filled in, all rubbish was brought out with us, we washed mainly in rivers (I mainly used a Ph neutral soap) and we used local people to transport our backpacks (using horses), and stayed in a beautiful Embara village one night, where the Panamanian travel company had built a special raised palm thatched hut for the trekkers to stay in overnight, so that we were part of the village but not imposing too much on them. Before we left, the women assembled their crafts near our hut so that we could look and buy if we wished, but there was never a feeling that this was expected and we were not "hassled" in the least. In fact, their crafts were exquisitely made and it was a pleasure to look and choose something. The only obvious negative impact on the environment was that we had to fly into Cana at the start and out of Punto Patino at the end by small charter plane.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Fabulous! I did not give it the 5 stars only as am very lucky to have been on several other fabulous wildlife trips!
