Northern Lights holiday in Swedish Lapland

Northern Lights vacation in Swedish Lapland

Small group adventure vacation
Typically you will be sharing your experiences with between 4-20 like minded travelers (depending on the trip, operator and how many others are booked on the trip) and you'll have a group leader with you. Whether you are traveling alone or with friends its good value, and a great way to meet new people! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of privacy. This trip will appeal to travelers of all ages who enjoy meeting new people as well as seeing new places.

How this vacation makes a difference

Abisko is set amidst spectacular countryside and has grown up around the rail link to Kiruna. It is spectacularly remote and surrounded by vast, pristine landscapes. The small number of tourist establishments in this village provide a vital lifeline for many of the local people through providing employment and economic benefits to local businesses. This all helps to reduce the amount of rural-urban movement which damages many of these areas.

The Abisko Mountain lodge has a strict policy regarding responsible travel. Mina and Dick Johansson set up the business principally through Dick's absolute adoration of the environment. As a mountain guide he fully appreciates the fragility of the environment but also how to get the best from it without leaving any trace.

From the moment you arrive you are encouraged to immerse yourself in the region and consider your surroundings. The hotel promotes local produce throughout its meals and gives a real insight into the region as well as supporting local producers as much as possible. Abisko allows us to spread the benefits of tourism away from some of the tourist hot spots and out into the remoter areas of Swedish Lapland.

Story of the vacation provider

The founder of this company started as a family summer operator over 10 years ago. When he started adding a few Lapland vacations he was amazed at how popular they were and, avoiding the ski resorts, he set up more snow vacations in privately-owned accommodations in the wilderness. Today, these places are filled every winter with people living the dream - going on husky safaris across frozen lakes and cooking on log fires beneath the glorious Northern Lights. Many visitors book these vacations as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity but find themselves returning again and again, unable to resist the magnificent snowscapes.

Northern Lights vacation in Swedish Lapland

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

It would be hard to give just one thing as our most memorable, as we did many things in our four days in Finland. We could narrow it down to two. Firstly, the ice hotel. It was so magical and full of amazing ice sculptures. We all slept well and were extremely warm in our sleeping bags. Secondly, our evening trip on snow bikes to find the northern lights. We were lucky enough to see a spectacular show of lights in the sky, apparently the best so far this winter.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Ensure they have enough winter clothes to go under the ski wear. Not being skiers we were not sure what to take and after talking to our ski friends they recommend 2 layers but even that was not enough for the -30/40 temperature. The hotel recommend a minimum of 3 layers under your ski wear.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

The vacation definitely benefited the local people, without the tourist the locals would struggle. Every thing was done to ensure that the environment was not effected.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

We all had a fantastic time and have many wonderful memories. The service at the ice hotel was more than expected. Our flight was delayed by 4/5 hour and we therefore did not arrive at the hotel until 23.00. All the staff had stayed to give us our evening meal and show us around. The staff at the Jeris Hotel were extremely friendly and went out of there way to help. It was one, if not the best vacation we have had. I would definitely book a vacation with you again and also do this type of vacation again. Thank you for all the help you have given us.
