How this vacation makes a difference

Environment

Our destinations are selected on the basis that we can make a difference throughout our visit. We are involved in conservation initiatives and community-based tourism.

We have chosen la Costa Verde in particular, because the area has been designated as a Natural reserve and park of Mining Archaeology. The Community that up until the 60’s was involved in mining, is now custodian of this amazingly rich natural habitat for wildlife, mining archaeology and a coastline of incredible natural beauty. Through benefiting from responsible tourism they will increasingly value their historical and natural heritage and coastline and have clear motivation to protect it.

Our vision is to organise vacations which will inspire you and provide memories that will last a lifetime. The slow pace of a walking vacation will be an experience from which you can forge a deep connection with the region and with the people you meet on your journey, limiting at the same time your impact on the environment.

As guides and tour leaders, we set an example, trying our best to leave the smallest footprint as possible:

- We limit printing on paper and recycle as much as possible.
- We don’t buy over-packed products.
- We buy fresh local products, aware of travel miles.
- Our picnic sets are re-usable.
- We try to reduce water, energy and fuel consumption
- We use bio-degradable products as much as possible.
- Use our bikes for shorter distance travel.
- Are involved in local conservation work.

Travelers on our Sardinia vacations are provided with our Travelers Codes that encourages the reduction of water usage, systems for collecting, recycling or safe disposal of litter and relevant suggestions to minimise damage to the environment, wildlife and marine ecosystems.

Community

From an economical perspective our policies are:

- Work with local people with fair wages.
- Buy local in small family run shops.
- We select family run accommodation, farm stays “agriturismi” with their own responsible policies, including certified organic labelling etc.
- Never negotiate local prices.

Also, our group sizes never exceed 12 people, in order to give our travelers the possibility to experience Sardinia in a relaxing way. Our friendly and easy going approach ensures a good personal relationship with every member of the group, combined with being able to participate and connect with the local culture, provides a richer vacation experience.

Story of the vacation provider

Having stayed in touch since primary school, Andy and Paul decided to cycle around South America in 1994. Andy was a keen cyclist but Paul hadn’t been on a bike since doing his paper round. They didn’t have an itinerary and used military maps to navigate through the desert. They had so much fun and met such amazing people that they agreed to set up a cycling tour company together. Andy says their trips create a flexible and intimate way to travel and absorb the local culture and, whats more, you never forget how to cycle – it’s just like riding a bike!

Self guided walking vacation in Sardinia

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing two Sardinian deer on the track in front of us, especially the one we saw after nearly 5 hours walking in the heat.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Take plenty of water, we took 3 litres each, every day, and ensure that you have very good walking boots, as the ground is very stony. Read the instructions carefully, as it is easy to take the wrong track, especially in the villages. (There are a few instructions for the route which could be improved).

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

YES, we stayed every night in the local agriturismo, and ate local produce. On our walk we encountered very few people, but bought drinks and cakes in the only village we passed through.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Excellent, very well organised, good to very good accommodation, excellent transfers always on time. It was very satisfying for two OAPs to complete each day's walk, and be ready for the next day's hike! We would give the overall vacation 4.5 stars out of 5!!!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The best memories I take away from this vacation are of the gorgeous springtime Sardinian scenery, eating enormous home-cooked meals at the agricoturismos and of the all-round kindness and generosity of everybody we met.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

I would highly recommend booking this trip as the company running it are genuinely concerned about giving all their guests the best possible vacation experience. They went beyond the call of duty to tailor the schedule for us and support us en-route. Tips: take lots of jumpers and a waterproof (you get sunshine, showers and lots of flowers). You will need a compass although maps and instructions are generally very clear. Discuss the itinerary with the tour operator as they are considering putting a rest day in the middle of the vacation, at a beach on the Costa Verde. My tip would be that the beach is gorgeous, but it's worth considering sticking to their existing timetable with the rest day at the end as the final agricoturismo is fabulous and the setting is stunning.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Definitely benefited local people. We realised how little employment there is in the south west of Sardinia. However, they are blessed with very beautiful scenery in which you can walk for miles and never see another soul (although you may see a goat or two). The former mining area is dramatic and interesting and provides a superb network of walking and biking tracks. It's clear that these could be a great resource in bringing the benefits of tourism to the area. Staying in the agricoturismos makes the vacation and really made us feel in touch with the local community, not to mention eating fabulous, locally-produced food.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Superb. We're already planning our return trip.
