This vacation is designed for families, small group and solo travelers

The accommodation is a traditional roomy 54 ft ketch with accommodation for six, consisting of 1 double cabin with en-suite and 4 comfortable single berth cabins with shared bathroom. It is especially suited to families, solos or groups of friends. Children from 8 years old to the most demanding teenager love the experience. Included in the price are all meals and your onboard skipper and cook who will provide an unforgettable vacation for everyone on board. This vacation is operated by a company based in the vacation destination and they will be able to provide expert local knowledge. If possible they will tailor-make your vacation to suit your requirements including length and start date of trip.

Environment

Sailing can be a sustainable mode of travel and our vacations operate on a “leave only a wake” policy. You are free to bring on board cycles on this trip to help ensure no negative environmental impact as you explore onshore too. Our cruising area is among the most unique and unspoiled in Europe and we have a responsibility to ensure it remains so. We are committed to excellence in offering vacations to people who have an appreciation of the sea and its wildlife, both below and above the waves. We value the marine and shore-based environment in which we operate and leave everything as we find it, respecting the delicate eco-system balance of sky, sea and shore.

Your fully qualified skipper, Michael Marshall is a scientist and experienced sailor with extensive knowledge of the marine environment and local ecology. He will happily educate on all aspects of sea and shore to be found on this trip. When operating the vessel, great care is taken to have negligible impact on the local wildlife including the breeding seal and bird colonies in this cruising area. Our hope is that people who experience the sheer beauty of the landscape and wildlife on our cruises will return home invigorated and with a greater understanding of the unique environment of the South West Coast of Scotland. All waste generated on board is brought ashore for recycling and we use locally produced ingredients for out meals wherever possible; including eating your own catch of crab, lobster or mackerel!

Community

We support the local economy by using the services of the local marina and guides and by buying all our provisions locally too. We encourage our guests to gain an insight into the local culture by going ashore to communities, heritage sites, botanical gardens, shops and restaurants as well as participating in cultural events. And simply having a beautiful traditional vessel anchored offshore enhances the pleasure of locals and the vacation experience of tourists to the area!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?


There were almost too many to mention! From learning about tying knots, how to work the boat, cruising for hours under sail, the care needed to find the right anchorage, to shooting a lobster pot and catching crabs, brittle stars and a conger eel (all thrown back), to learning about the environment by collecting plankton for controlled scientific, global research, to the incredible scenery and beautiful coastline, to the vast variety of birds and their young, to sightings of porpoise, dolphin and the rare common seal.

To cap it all, we had a skipper, Michael, who is passionate about all things marine and his lovely 'crew' Colette, who provided us with breakfast, morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, all cooked in a small galley and done in between working the boat! The both worked incredibly hard to make it an informative and most enjoyable vacation! Thank you both!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?


Follow the guidance provided regarding shoes, gloves etc and you won't go far wrong!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?


Yes, due to the location of the marina, even with our small party (of 5) the local
B&B/hotels, pub and taxi drivers all benefitted; the research into global warming via the collecting of plankton helps with the bigger picture and conservation of marine life is of paramount importance

Exciting, memorable and a wonderful experience.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?


The most outstanding part of the trip was definitely the experience of being immersed in the stunningly beautiful environment of the lochs of western Scotland. This combined with the knowledge and passion (for sailing and the wildlife) of our hosts, Michael and Colette, made it truly memorable.
We were very fortunate in the company of fellow travelers, who made the journey enjoyable on another level. There was much laughter and camaraderie around the table at meal times.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?


Be prepared to take on new challenges and test yourself beyond your comfort zone.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?


Yes. We were able to visit historic sites and local hotels in remote villages along the coast. We developed a greater understanding of local history and an appreciation of the issues of conserving and protecting wild creatures of the lochs.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?


A fabulous unique opportunity to enjoy and marvel at nature in all its glory.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?


"Ghosting" back from Arran across a sunlit sea. The beautiful area. After that, without wishing to offend the lovely baby seals, the porpoises, the 15 crabs or the knotmaster, probably Colette's lovely meals!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?


Follow Colette's pre-trip and kit guidance. If you have snorkel, wetsuits or other kit definitely think about bringing them.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?


Certainly low impact, and by educating us, and setting an example to others, definitely supports conservation.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?


A really terrific week which we will always remember (along with how to tie a bowline). Two of my colleagues at work have already expressed interest!

The amazing scenery both in sunshine and rain. And our hosts, Colette and Michael.

Do as Michael and Colette suggest - pack light and bring wet weather gear ie rain jackets and boots.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?


Yes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?


Absolutely fantastic for ALL ages, young and old. Colette is a brilliant cook and the meal she made out of freshly caught Mackerel fish has set a very high bench mark to beat. Michael knows so much and is a very patient teacher. We miss them dearly - thank you for a trip to remember!
