Responsible tourism: Vacation to Transylvania, tailor made

Environment

Guests of the Castle are directly helping the Count justify the conservation of the surrounding pristine nature and restoration of Transylvania’s heritage.

Wildlife and nature trails, hiking and horse riding tours are also organised and available.

Community

The family have returned to Transylvania after 50 years of exile. The estate is composed of buildings in two villages. During the Communist regime in Romania, many of the buildings had fallen into ruins. The family immediately set about finding ways to save their heritage and restore the estate to its former character. Through the development of a unique tourism venture, the family have started turning their vision into reality. The guesthouses are situated in the tiny village of Miklósvár in Szeklerland, Transylvania.

Since late 2006, we have been developing and supervising the restoration of The Prince of Wales’s properties in Transylvania. His Royal Highness’s house in Viscri (Deutschweisskirch) in the Saxon Land (a region of Transylvania called 'Koenigsboden') is now available for booking alongside the guesthouses. HRH's other property is situated in a remote little village that one of his Transylvanian ancestors founded in the 16th century. It is surrounded by wilderness and the local brown bears count to the regular guests on his grounds.

Guests of the Castle are directly helping the Count afford the restoration work. The castle also supports the local community with jobs, from kitchen staff too tour guides right through to drivers. Our guests are also encouraged to explore the near by villages and enjoy the local facilities (there us 1 local pub which is always warmly appreciated by guests).

Bring some good walking boots as their are lots of opportunities to hike around the locality as an alternative or in addition to organised trips. Grab the opportunity to visit whilst it is still relatively untouched with tourism.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The most exciting part was visiting Bran castle reputed home of Count Dracula as well as meeting our very own Count on arrival; and most memorable had to be our nature guided day out; the Romanian countryside is untouched and so beautiful.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

We had the first and last night in the capital before traveling on by train to the counts guest house and this worked well as otherwise it could be tiring doing it all in one go.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

Yes, the counts staff were local people and were all so charming and helpful. Also all the food and drink we consumed during our stay was locally produced and really tasty!

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was a magical vacation. The people we met were so generous and helpful. The Romanian countryside is completely unspoiled and takes you back in time; and the culture in Transylvania is stunning - highlights for us being: Bran Castle, the gorgeous town of Brasov and Peles Palace.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

I suppose that depends on your definition of exciting! The lack of signage and punctuality on the trains made ensuring we got off at the right stop quite exciting. In Bucharest when parts of the building started falling around us as we walked down the street was also quite exciting!

The vacation was a lovely experience and it's definitely something we'd like
to do again but there wasn't anything particularly heart-pumping, head-spinning, hold-yourself-in exciting. There were naturally some highlights and I'd probably say that they were: Bran Castle, meeting the Count and drinking Caraway seed brandy, walking in the hills, the city tour of Bucharest and going around the Parliament Palace.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Be aware of the language difference. Up in the mountains they do not speak
Romanian - they speak Hungarian! Your Romanian phrase book will not help you
here ;)

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, and minimized
impacts on the environment?
Yes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

4.5/5 - would do it again in a heartbeat!
