Responsible tourism: Wilderness activity vacation with huskies in Finland
All of the activities on this tour are unmotorised and done in a way that does not harm the nature. Also many activities aim to use the local nature resources in responsible way. We for example go to pick fresh forest berries instead of buying fruits brought from abroad, and we catch the fish from our own lake instead of buying seafood. Our husky base is located by a lake where no one else is fishing and the fish populations are very strong.
We avoid using any disposable products and have for example special cups and plates for wilderness use, which are light to carry and easy to wash. The cabin where we live with the huskies is heated with local wood. The wood we make ourselves or buy from the locals. There is always plenty of extra wood available in our area. Also the sauna is heated with wood.
Water we get from our own well, and for the sauna from the lake. Wastewater treatment is modern and does not harm the environment. The huskies of the company are taken very good care of. Our area even has a special vet visiting us yearly to check the wellbeing of the dogs. Dog faeces are composted so that they don't harm the environment. Dogs eat a lot of salmon fish bones and heads which come as a side product from the local fish farm and would otherwise be waste.
Our own food is mostly plant-based, and if we serve any meat it is game meat, or from a small organic farm where we know the animals are treated ethically. We believe that plant-based diet is good for us and the environment, why meat plays a small role in our diet. When we serve fish it is caught by ourselves from small local lakes where overfishing does not exist and fish stocks are not endangered. To take part in our tours you certainly do not have to be vegetarian or vegan, but if you want to try plant-based diet we are happy to serve it!
On this tour you have a chance to face the local people as the guide(s) is/are living here the whole year round, not only the busiest seasons. The guides are a part of the local community, good friends with their neighbours and their tourism business in highly respected in the area. Foreign guests are warmly welcomed. Finnish people love to go to the forest, and mostly they still go there to collect something: berries, mushrooms or fire wood. Very often they go alone. There is a lot of wilderness for everybody looking for privacy and being alone in the nature. Still, sometimes we might meet somebody in the wilderness, and then it is a very old tradition to have a nice chat and even make a fire together to have a cupful of strong fresh coffee.
The food cooked and served during the week is strongly based on local ingredients (berries, mushrooms, vegetables, occasional fish & game meat) which we get very locally, avoiding long transportations. Some of the food we even collect together from the wilderness! Berries and mushrooms are picked by ourselves or by locals who earn some extra-money during autumn time by gathering the nature goods. Potatoes and other vegetables are being bought from a local small farm. Fish we serve is caught by ourselves (we also fish for dog food) and the game meat comes from local hunters who hunt in sustainable way and do respect their prey. If we don't bake the bread ourselves, it is bought from a village bakery.
Outdoor lunches are mostly enjoyed on fireplaces which are maintained by Forest and Park Service. Such fireplaces are in free use for everyone. We are doing co-operation with Forest and Park Service and we pay a certain amount of money when we use these places. This money goes for maintaining the fire places and other infrastructure in nature protection and recreational areas.
By using local work force and subcontractors we do our share to help people to be able to make their living in this beautiful area and to reduce people moving to cities searching for work.
