Responsible tourism: Pisa to Lucca walking vacation in Italy
Walking, and particularly walking in pairs or in small (family) groups, not only has a very low impact on the environment but it enhances the contact with, and thus the respect for, the surrounding countryside.
This tour runs through an area where the natural sources, in this case water, have been used to serve the cities nearby for centuries. Here, we will see examples of the collaboration between nature and humans, the simple but ingenious interventions used to store, purify and transport the water, making use of natural materials, elements and forces without substantially affecting the environment (well, the aqueducts are quite impressive but in harmony with the surroundings)
In the itinerary, we explain the history of the area and the engineering of the sites but we also provide background information about the plants and wildlife of the region. We hope this will help you to understand the environment, so that you can experience it instead of simply consuming it: “As you learn more, your understanding will grow, and all your senses will be enhanced”. This region is certainly worth it!
During your visit to the Monti, you will spend two nights in an ancient Podere (a country home), which has its own olive groves and produces in an organic way its own olive oil.
Individual walking tours, in case of good behaviour, are of low impact on the natural environment wildlife. The route book of all hikes contain information about the flora and fauna in the area, often it treats as well the geological aspects that are the foundation, in order to enhance the knowledge and interest in matter. The route book of all hikes recommends to deposit waste in the bins provided or to take it to the next accommodation. Where possible, we work with accommodations that offer a menu ‘km 0’: Every tour proposed contains at least 1 night -on most tours 2- in an agriturismo (farmstays). An agriturimo is obliged (for law) that a certain percentage of what is served derives from their own crops/animals and another percentage derives from neighbour farmers (the minimum percentage differs in each region). In some of the cases farming is organic (sometimes certified, sometimes not).
Although the ways in which the natural resources of the region were used might be ancient, they are still very much in use in the present day. The mountain sides are covered in numerous olive groves, whose crops are used for olive oil. The natural beauty of the countryside and the presence of medieval fortresses and fortified villages like Vicopisano, the Certosa and the Pieve in Claci make this an attractive area for tourism. Nevertheless, the proximity of the two lovely and internationally famous cities of Pisa and Lucca have the charmed the main tourist flows away from the mountains.
Consequently, we are happy to contribute to the economy of the small family-run lodging places in this area that depend mainly on local and national clients (though the numbers these days are dropping) and a few adventurous tourists who delight in leaving the beaten track.
Everything you eat, drink or use on the tour will have been produced locally. Consumer goods in this case are a bed and a bath, meals and drinks, services such as luggage transport and cleaning but also, on your own initiative, a visit to cultural and/or historical sites that are dotted around the region and the region will be grateful!
We offer individual hiking tours off the beaten track in Italy with the device; ‘to experience instead of consume’. The company aims to offer a ‘full immersion’ in the different areas, not only by leading them through beautiful and interesting environments but also by offering family run accommodations that share the love and respect for the environment and a fine product, and by providing background information regarding everything that might enhance and respond to the interest in the area; history, nature, culture, general notices and others.
