Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Everest and Gokyo Lakes trekking vacation

The flow of tourism in Gokyo is increasing every year. The Gokyo valley is exceptional for its sacred lakes and the ascent to Gokyo Ri provides a spectacular vantage point for Mount Everest. Therefore, the obvious negative impact of tourism on the mountainous environment is pollution. We strongly believe in 'nature based adventures'. Our responsibility in the Gokyo Lakes Series is to stop the destruction of the precious water systems from sewage and waste management problems. For this reason, we generally use local lodges and tea houses when possible, instead of accommodation in tents, as they encourage environmental pollution both directly and indirectly. Decomposition in the Everest region is not viable due to low temperature and feasibility. The garbage which is not disposable constantly pollutes the environment which is why we contain, gather and dispose of our garbage properly and discourage the use of polluting substances as to maintain a clean environment and preserve the scenic beauty of the Himalayas, live glaciers and glacial lakes of Gokyo.

Our philosophy is simple: We believe in ‘Sustainable Tourism through eco-friendly practices’. Our aim is to maximize the benefits of local communities whilst protecting the fragility of the area. We highly encourage trekkers to buy from stalls run by the Aama Samuha (Mothers Association) selling traditional Sherpa food items and Cottage Industry items. Tourism has generated a handicraft industry in Everest Region. We thus recommend our clients to buy souvenirs to their families. We serve locally prepared foods and use local lodges and tea house during the trek.

We ensure that all of the porters/support team members and all other staff serving or traveling with you are provided with adequate clothing and equipment. We provide insurance and emergency helicopter evacuation for our staff if needed. Our staff is young, energetic, trustworthy and professional in their work. You can meet them in person before your trip departure in Kathmandu. We operate our treks according to the guidelines of the International Porter Protection group (IPPG).
