Saadani Safari accommodation
Visiting the nearby village was a real eye-opener and an experience I could not have obtained any other way in a short vacation of three weeks in Tanzania. The Barbours were most welcoming and kind and I felt part of the family. (more)

Selous Game Reserve safari
Having an elephant peer through the door of our banda was quite a surprise, but my favourite part was meeting lots of locals and learning bits of Swahili and tribal dialect...Tempted to give it five stars! Probably joint first with a long trip to Belize. (more)

Climb Kilimanjaro, Rongai Route
An amazing experience, as I celebrated my 50th birthday at the summit with Hashim, the guide that supported me throughout the summit night, ensuring my safety. I have some brilliant photographs and met some lovely people!  (more)

Country facts for Tanzania vacations

Weather & the best time to go
The best time to go to Tanzania is May - October. January and February, while being two of the hottest months of year, are the best time to visit the Serengeti to see the migration of the Wildebeest.

Getting there & around
There are two major airports in Tanzania; Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam, and Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). There is a widely used bus service and Tanzanians drive on the left side of the road. A national rail service links the major towns, and there is also an international train from Tanzania to Zambia.

History
Tanzania (officially The United Republic of Tanzania) was formed in 1964 when Tanganyika and Zanibar united.

Main attractions
National Parks (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Selous, and more), Mount Kilimanjaro, Stone Age sites, scuba diving and amazing beaches.

Languages
Swahili (Kiswahili) and, to a lesser extent, English, Arabic and many local languages are spoken in Tanzania.

Money
The currency is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS).

Time zone
East Africa Time, GMT+3 (UTC+3). Be aware that Tanzanians consider the day to start at 6am (0 hour), so when telling time in Kiswahili 11am is often referred to as 5am (i.e. 11am minus 6 hours). To avoid any confusion, a Tanzanian will tell time in English if they want to use the western standard and in Kiswahili if they use the local standard.
