Responsible tourism: Provence self catering apartments in France

Environment

We are very aware and actively support our environment. Recycling everything used in our works, and all waste generated by the family and guests. We buy foods and products directly from our local farmers and the village market, we advise guests and recommend various producers who are environmentally aware

We use eco friendly lighting and propose to convert to a more sustainable energy and water source in the near future. We suggest our guests be aware of their footprint inside and outside the house

The house is 500 years old and has been renovated, using local materials, and traditional methods, adding our own style, while respecting it's history and our environment. We have learned from local artists and craftsmen, who have advised and provided us with fantastic sustainable options. In decorating we have used only natural earth pigments from Roussillon (Le Conservation des Ocres in Roussillion) and we recommend guests, to explore these natural colors and techniques for their own homes

Community

We support and encourage the community through our workshops and the many activities around the area. Offering local artist and talented people a space to create, connect and get inspired.

We offer advice and can suggest countless gems in the surrounding area, recommending local restaurants and the many activities going on around us. We sometimes have artist residence, art exhibitions and we have a show room where we promote and support local artist art and artisans.

We sell natural clothes and objects from local and international designers fairly traded. We also have a community board for people to connect and discover what others are doing around us and further away...

There are also many fantastic things to discover in the sunshine of Provence... such as hilltop villages, roman ruins, painting & cookery courses, parent and child pottery classes. Hot air ballooning, cycling and many amazing treks inland and on the mountains around

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

From the moment we walked through the huge old oak door we knew that we were going to have an amazing vacation, and we were right. The operator exudes feelings of calm and contentment. The old building has been sympathetically restored, our apartment was comfortable and tastefully furnished. Ian and Axelle are the perfect hosts, very informative about the history of the building and the local area. We travelled around exploring the local markets and villages. We loved the market at Bedoin and the villages of Faucon and Brantes. This was our first visit to Provence and we definitely intend to return.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Take mosquito repellent

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

As there are not any large supermarkets in the vicinity we supported the local shops, we travelled from London to Avignon by train therefore hopefully less damaging to the environment than flying.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Fantastic

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

1. A beautiful building and apartment, all lovingly restored and furnished with wonderful taste. The top apartment is really spacious, with plenty of places to just relax and hang out. There are also two fantastic terraces - one shady one for dining and one open to the sun and incredible views on Mont Ventoux. Our hosts, Axelle and Ian, were so welcoming and gave great advice on where to go locally.
2. Caromb village - very historic, french and full of life, seemed to be few vacationmakers. Everything needed was within walking distance, along ancient passageways and cobbled streets - greengrocers, little supermarket, bakery, and lots of great restaurants.
3. Local area - very easy to get to Avignon and Aix, etc. But local countryside is gorgeous and there is even a small lake for swimming, within a 10 min drive. And plenty of great walks in sun and shade. For us, Mont Ventoux (and the area around it) was a real highlight.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Make sure you spend time exploring in Caromb village and do all your shopping there rather than in the big out of town supermarkets. Go to Avignon - it's such a quick drive. And just take it easy and give yourselves time to relax in the apartment!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Overall, it felt like a sustainable vacation - we got the Eurostar all the way down to Avignon where we hired a car. LVH is within the old walls of Caromb - so there's no need to drive to the shops as everything you need is within walking distance. We supported the local traders and restaurants - and they were very welcoming and friendly. You definitely need a car to get around (although there are lots of cyclists too!), though. The recycling infrastructure seems pretty good and LVH provided bins downstairs for recycling.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Overall, it was fantastic - the reality was better than the photos. I don't usually like going back to the same place twice, but this was very special and I hope to return!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The best part about the vacation was being surrounded by beautiful countryside and easily accessible characteristic villages. Staying somewhere so authentic was magical.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

A car is useful for getting around although bikes would be great for the more adventurous. Explore all the local places and the local wines!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We stayed at the old hospital which the owners have restored. It's a place steeped in history and therefore preserving this I'd helping the local area and supports conservation

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Loved it. We could have stayed a lot longer.
