Rural accommodation in Croatia, Vineyard Cottage

Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your vacation will help support conservation and local people.

The cottage was built using exclusively local natural materials, such as stone and wood. This vineyard cottage is a replica of a traditional vineyard shed that was used to protect vineyards, grapes and crops. It was built and constructed using recycled materials only. The cottage uses water from a creek nearby for a drop by drop irrigation system for vineyards, plants, vegetable and other crops. All leaves, plants and the rest of organic foods are recycled to compost and reused in our fields. Solar energy is solely used for electricity power, with solar panels located near the cottage. Air conditioning runs on geo thermal energy. As we use many wild plants and herbs for ingredients in our local food, we also help sustain the habitat of these plants. Our region is rich with various aromatic herbs such as: sage, mint, bay leaves, rosemary, wild onions, chicory, wild asparagus, etc. We encourage all our guests and visitors to use bicycles, walk and hike.

The Impacts of this Trip

Our property and family are active members of the local Agritoursim association which regularly promote this rural area and provide development for projects in the region. Our goals are to develop this rural area for special interest travel and sustainable tourism. In the last period of 4-5 years we successfully organised different annual manifestations and organised the creation of hiking paths and biking trails throughout the region.

The association regularly involves itself in charity and community volunteering with special activities for children and the local population. Every year we organise a campaign for cleaning the protected area of the river "Ljuta", where protected river turtles live. This is very important because our property and the northern region of “Konavle” belongs to the “Natura 2000”, an EU wide network of nature protected areas.

Our family significantly contributes to the association and local community. Cooperation with all our neighbours is very important. We exchange our seasonal products or purchase local food e.g cheese, meat from farms in our neighbourhood.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The scenery. Peace and tranquility

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Not an awful lot to do, it was the perfect place to relax after Dubrovnik. We just sat and admired the view and drank wine in the evening watching the sunset. Can't use high power electrical devices like hairdryers - Phone chargers ok.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes definitely. Solar powered electricity. Lots of local produce for sale.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was fantastic. After 12 days touring Croatia it was the perfect end to our trip. Very rustic and rural - quirky little place - had everything we needed. Very close to the airport if we need to nip back in the future! Family run venture, ate at their taverna just up the road. Going home very chilled.
