Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your vacation will help support conservation and local people.

As a socially responsible business, our Samui hotel was founded with the core value of driving sustainable development by employing an integrated and participatory approach to minimise our impacts while safeguarding and enhancing the physical environment for present and future generations.

Among our various initiatives is our aim to reduce and ultimately eliminate single-use plastics from our operations by Earth Day 2019 including the removal of all plastic drinking straws from our restaurants and switching to biodegradable drinking straws instead as well as replacing our plastic water bottles with glass throughout the resort. In terms of our supply chain, we work closely with local suppliers, when possible, and have had them sign our Environmental and Social Sustainability Policy which addresses the scope of our operations including; location and sensitivity of the local environment, environmental and social impacts, activities, products, services and facilities.

In our company’s view, the mission of business and the purpose of growth are to build a better society for all. We see sustainability not only in terms of the environment, but also in terms of the benefit to the communities we operate in. This has been ourethos since the company was founded and continues to be the guiding principle. Our ‘Stay for Good' programme encompasses our sustainability efforts and encourages our guests to get involved through several initiatives including our Coral Rejuvenation Project which invites them to take an active role in the remediation of our marine ecosystem. Guests take fragmented pieces of coral that have been broken off from strong currents and replant them in a protected area of our house reef. Additionally, guests can participate in both our Sense of Nature Tour and Guided Snorkelling Tour to learn about the biodiversity of our location.

We prioritize green management in every aspect of our operations. Our crowning achievement in this regard is being awarded Gold Certified status - after five years of consecutive certification - from EarthCheck, the world's leading scientific benchmarking, certification and advisory group for travel and tourism; as well as the ‘Green Hotel Award - Gold Certification’, by Thailand’s Department of Environmental Quality Promotion, which is awarded on a biennial basis. Our resort is one of only three on Samui that were able to achieve this distinguishable honor in both 2015 & 2017. Each award was achieved through by significantly reducing consumption rates through improved efficiency and by adopting new technology or practices regarding key operational indicators such as energy; emissions; water, waste and paper use; as well as chemical and pesticide use.

The Impacts of this Trip

Since the inception of our hotel in Samui, we have sought to be agents of social and economic development. We strongly believe that our actions and inactions significantly impact our progeny, and that good businesses are also businesses that do good.

One of the key pillars of our Corporate Social Responsibility efforts is our Seedlings program, which supports local families, and nurtures young people at risk of societal exclusion by providing them with the motivation and means to complete their education in order to transcend the poverty cycle.

We strive to support the community in which we operate by hiring talent from the surrounding area, 97% of our team of 291 employees are local; providing a complimentary retail space for a local artisan at our daily breakfast restaurant with no commission taken for the sale of any goods; offering a complimentary shuttle van service twice daily for our guests to access the nearby area and to spend money at local business as per their preference.

The promotion of the natural and cultural heritage of the area in which we operate is of utmost importance and we are proud to deliver a unique vacation experience for our guests starting with the welcome ritual upon arrival which includes the floating of a folded lotus flower and the enjoyment of coconut-infused beverages and snacks through to the bespoke touchpoints in our service to the daily delivery of local treats, fragrances and turndown gifts in our villas to authentic dining experiences to culturally-rich guest activities to local handicrafts and products at our gallery; all of which combine to create a guest experience which has garnered us direct positive feedback over our eight years of operations.

Lastly, guests can contribute to our Green Imperative Fund – through an opt-out donation of US$2 per room night that is matched dollar for dollar by us – which aims to widen the reach and effectiveness of our efforts to provide critical financial support to enable worthy environmental action and community based projects in the local area.
