Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your vacation will help support conservation and local people.

Conservation & Restoration:
• Looking after local reefs - Coral predator removal and annual monitoring
• National coral reef monitoring protocols
• Hosted the National science symposium
• Scientific advisory committee for governmental ministry
• Beach cleanups – trash removal
• Community cleanups – raise awareness and trash removal
• Plastic waste awareness – promote Parley of the seas (local recycling initiative)
• Coral planting – to restore damaged reefs (15,854 corals since 2001)
• Citizen science (marine megafauna)
• Shark conservation – monitor the impact of the national shark fishing ban
• Turtle conservation and head start program (now on hold) – identify nesting areas and survival
• Tree planting – 270 on Ukulhas, 650 on Omadhoo, 500 Gaadhifushi (fruit and other trees)

The Marine Lab supports local schools and frequently invites students to the island to engage with activities and provide educational presentations. This year, the Muhyiddin School’s Environment Society (ages ranging from 12 – 16 years) visited the island on Earth Day, to participate in an island reef cleanup and to share experiences about dealing with plastic pollution and discuss strategies and objectives for combatting it in the local community. In the past school visits have also included learning about animal conservation, such as turtle head-start programs and participated in the Marine Lab’s weekly reef cleanups, which target coral predator starfish that have in recent years become the second largest threat to coral reefs in the Maldives.
