1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

We loved exploring three different areas of northwest Cyprus. We had a different route for each day's ride, so whether it was exploring the mountains and valleys, or hugging the rugged coastline along the Akamas peninsula, each ride gave us plenty of stunning views to enjoy. Seeing almond trees in blossom as well as orange and lemon groves added to the beauty of the area. We also gained an insight into the island's history when cycling through deserted villages, a legacy of the 1974 invasion. The Akamas ridge was truly spectacular and very rewarding, with stunning views of both Lara Bay on one side of the peninsular and the turquoise waters of the blue lagoons on right. We had some pretty special picnics too - nothing beats finding the perfect spot to eat delicious bread, cheese, tomatoes and ultra fresh oranges when you've done come hard cycling. For extra energy, buy the local peanut brittle bars, they were extremely yummy!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be prepared for all weather conditions. We took panniers, which were a god-send as we could pack all our wet-weather gear, as well as suntan lotion (we needed both!). This also gave us room for taking picnic food, as well as snacks and extra water, for the days when we wouldn't be cycling through any villages. That said, we arrived in mid February, so not all the tavernas were open in the mountain villages; sometimes eating at the hotel was the only option.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We really enjoyed staying in Lysos, in a little apartment close to the main part of the village. This meant eating our evening meals in the local taverna (simple but excellent food) and had having breakfast at the coffee shop, where the owner offered us a delicious traditional breakfast consisting of Cypriot yoghurt, nuts and honey followed by freshly grilled hallumi, tomatoes, cucumber & olives - and good strong coffee! On the days our route took us through villages, we made the most of stopping at a coffee shop and sometimes had the chance to chat to the owner (who quite often they spoke excellent English, having left Cyprus after 1974 and then returning back to their village years later). So by eating locally where we could, I hope this helped benefit the local communities.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

The organisation was superb. Helen and Alastair had thought of everything, with route maps on the Garmin, plus back up instructions on laminated crib sheets. Their local knowledge was also excellent and they couldn't have been more welcoming and friendly. The cycling was terrific, the countryside beautiful and the Cypriots charming - we'd definitely go back!

We're so pleased you loved your self-guided cycling vacation in beautiful, rural northwest Cyprus. It was an absolute pleasure to meet you and Bryn and share our passion for the great outdoors and our intimate knowledge of the local area. You certainly experienced a typical week in February with rain one minute followed by brilliant sunshine the next, but as you said, the stunning vista of almond trees in full bloom alongside an array of citrus trees dripping with fruit, makes a sunshine rain shower just part of the experience. Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

We enjoyed every day. Highlights include the gorge, the ride down to Latchi in the afternoon of the second day, the relaxing rides along the coastline and the beautiful scenery and sun.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

We had not managed to put many [or even any] miles into our legs before we went on vacation and most of our cycling at home is less steep and on tarmac, so we found the ascents quite challenging. However, we managed to do the whole route the first couple of days, then the flat mostly road coastal cycling was fine. We did shorten the last day's route. Helen and Alistair can make the routes flexible to suit your requirements.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, the hotels were run by local families and employed local people. The hotel in Latchi had its own fishing boats, so the fish was fresh and local. The areas of off road countryside were generally litter free, a real delight to the eye!

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Very good. Helen and Alistair were really informative and helpful. They were able to give us different options for the rides. The bikes were the best we've had on cycling vacations.

Thank you for your kind and positive comments. As you know, we can tailor the rides to suit your tastes and fitness level, although inevitably there are some hills that need to be climbed as north west Cyprus has many rolling hills and valleys to explore. The one long sustained climb to get from sea level to the last hotel at 600m above sea level has an uplift option, which you happily took, to allow time to explore the many mountain villages around the last hotel base. It was a pleasure to meet you both and we are so happy you enjoyed your self-guided cycling vacation in the warm April sunshine.
