Saronic Gulf small group sailing vacation in Greece

Carbon reduction

Your vacation will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this vacation and how to reduce them.

Environment

Accommodation & Meals
During this trip, we spend eight days island hopping around five Greek islands and the Peloponnese peninsula, and therefore, spend seven nights aboard a yacht in cabin accommodation. When meals are included, local ingredients will be used where possible. Where meals are not provided, our expert guides can recommend seafront restaurants and guests can opt for authentic Greek specialties like, fresh Greek salads and traditional recipes from the places we’ll be.

Activity & Environment
As the itinerary is mainly based on hiking and watersports, our trip will have a low impact on the surrounding environment. Guests can enjoy three hikes and a combination of swimming, snorkelling and other optional activities including kayaking and scuba diving. On day three we’ll embark on an island tour using e-bikes, visiting a range of coves and beaches. To travel with the least possible emissions, we sail as much as the winds allow us to, to reduce motor usage. The yacht is equipped with solar panels for on-board energy, and there are recycling facilities on-board too.

Water
Water is a really important issue with activity-based trips and whilst we must stay hydrated, it is also vital that we have a system for providing clean water without causing lots of waste with plastic bottles. We suggest that instead of repeatedly buying bottled water, guests should re-fill a singular bottle throughout the trip with the water provided. Guests are advised what water is drinkable and larger water containers are purchased to produce less plastic waste.

Group Size:
This is a small group tour, meaning that we have a low impact on the environments and communities we visit and are able to ensure that we do not disrupt or lead to the displacement of local people. The small number also allows us to stay in unique accommodation that cannot benefit from coach tours and other mass tourism due to the limited sizes.

UK Office:
It all starts at home where we work towards reducing our carbon footprint in our offices through engergy conservation measures, recycling policies and the promotion of cycling and walking as a means for our staff to commute. Our head office has become a plastic-free zone with the use of plastic bottles being banned in our head office and we distributed reusable water bottles and tote bags to every staff member. We also support a large number of community and environmental projects in different parts of the world and try to give something back to the places we visit.

Community

Community & Culture
This trip is packed with numerous cultural wonders that guests can discover. Whilst visiting Spetses in the Saronic Islands, we can enjoy exploring the naval history this town has to offer. When exploring Aegina Island handmade souvenirs and products can be purchased such as those made from pistachios. By purchasing these products, we are supporting the local community by giving back to small street vendors and sustaining their work. We also continue to support small businesses by visiting an olive oil farm to learn about the oil-making process and taste the local produce. Our visit directly benefits smaller businesses like this, as they receive financial support from our tourism, and money generated is usually reinvested into the area. We’ll also visit the ancient Epidaurus archaeological site, home of the god of medicine, Asclepius.
To extend our cultural knowledge of Greece, there is also an optional visit to the Temple of Aphaea - an ancient archaeological site - or alternatively guests can visit the markets in the port and sample pistachios from kiosks at the harbour, and or buy fresh fruits and vegetables from the ‘floating groceries’.
