Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your vacation will help support conservation and local people.

Accommodation & Meals
On this trip we spend seven nights in comfortable hotels across Mexico. Where possible, we prefer to stay in smaller hotels and family run accommodation as our stay directly supports the communities we visit, as it creates employment opportunities and most of the income generated is reinvested into the area. We try to avoid larger chain hotels, but in certain regions this isn’t always possible. We spend four nights at the comfortable Pavo Real Resort in Tulum by the coast, which enables guests to experience an authentic Mexican feel throughout our time spent here. We also stay at Hacienda Chichen Resort, which has been recognised for being one of the most special Green Leader hotels you can stay in. Here, local Mayan people are also employed, therefore, guests have immediate intimate contact with the Mayan culture.
Where meals are included, fresh, locally sourced ingredients will be used where possible. Our expert guides are able to recommend cafes and restaurants for when meals are not provided, where guests can tickle their taste buds and try out authentic Mexican specialities such as chilaquiles, enchiladas and elote.

Activity & Environment
Few vacations have as little detrimental impact on the environment and local residents as a trip like this, we incorporate sustainable activities such as walking, climbing and cycling to mitigate damage. As we are very conscious of our effects on the places we visit, we also operate a ‘leave no trace’ policy, whereby we ensure no rubbish including plastic has been left behind.
Our trip leaders also encourage guests to keep to advised routes when exploring to minimise erosion. When discovering the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve and hiking through the jungle, our expert guides will help us spot diverse bird species in a responsible way by ensuring we keep a fair distance away without disrupting their means.

Water is a key issue with walking trips and whilst it is important to stay hydrated, it is also imperative that we have a system for providing clean water without causing unnecessary waste with plastic bottles. We suggest that instead of repeatedly buying bottled water, guests should re-fill a singular bottle throughout their trip.

Group Size
Since this is a small group tour, we will have a low impact on the environments and communities we visit and are able to ensure that we do not disrupt or lead to the displacement of local people. The small number also allows us to stay in unique, small family-run accommodations that cannot benefit from coach tours and other mass tourism due to their limited sizes.

UK Office:
It all starts at home where we work towards reducing our carbon footprint in our offices through energy conservation measures, recycling policies and the promotion of cycling and walking as a means for our staff to commute. Our head office has become a plastic-free zone with the use of plastic bottles being banned in our head office and we distributed reusable water bottles and tote bags to every staff member. We also support a large number of community and environmental projects in different parts of the world and try to give something back to the places we visit.

The Impacts of this Trip

Community & Culture
On day two in Punta Laguna, we’ll visit a Mayan community that live alongside troops of Spider and Howler monkeys. We’ll spend time here exploring the trails and learning about the Mayan life. This enables culture interaction as the Mayan people can also learn from guests.
Throughout this trip we stop off at numerous poignant Mayan sites including the incredible Chichen Itza. Guests will have the opportunity to learn about the sophisticated structures and their astronomical significance. The Yellow City recognised for its gold and white buildings, is also on the itinerary for day three where we stop at an imposing monastery in the center of town, before taking part in an exciting cooking class. Here, we’ll learn how to prepare traditional guacamole and salsa and enjoy these creations for lunch. On day five, we’ll embark on an archaeological adventure to the site of Tulum, and acknowledge the historical buildings and wall art.
During our afternoon in Tulum, guests will have the opportunity to purchase gifts made from local craftsmen such as wooden tribal sculptures and ceramics. By purchasing these products, we are supporting the local community by giving back to small street vendors and sustaining their work.
