Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Dordogne family activity week in France

The Dordogne is a beautiful, rural area with rolling fields, lazy rivers and historic castles dotted along the water’s edge. Our aim is to enjoy this fantastic destination whilst working hard at leaving no more than footsteps behind. Each of our activities on this trip has a low impact on the environment- canoeing, walking, cycling and sightseeing do not depend on engines or fuel to get you around and so we have a smaller carbon footprint. We also rent equipment locally from small businesses in order to carry these activities out, which has a positive effect on local economy.

UK Office:
As well as our responsible travel focus on the ground our team in the UK office do their bit by reducing our overall carbon footprint – with energy conservation measures and recycling policies in place, we are proud to be actively reducing the waste produced and our impact on the environment. Our office staff are encouraged to cycle or walk into work to promote general fitness as well as reducing our carbon foot print. As well as running trips in the Dordogne we offer trips worldwide. As a result we also support various projects all over the world to try and give something back to the places we visit.

Accommodation and Meals:
By running this trip for several years we have built up good relationships with the local communities in Les Eyzies and Beynac. We have handpicked family-run campsites for our groups to stay at during the trip and our leaders actively encourage recycling of any waste. Where meals are provided, we source local produce from the large range of shops and markets available in the area. Breakfast and lunch are continental style with fresh fruit, bread, meat and cheese and evening meals are taken in local restaurants. Eating in authentic restaurants rather than chains is a great way to boost local economy and to try some regional specialties e.g. cafes in Sarlat sell some excellent truffles and fois gras.

Group Size:
This small group tour has a maximum of 20 participants, meaning that we have a low impact on the environments and communities we visit and are able to ensure that we do not disrupt or lead to the displacement of local people. The small number also allows us to stay in unique, family-run hotels that cannot benefit from coach tours and other mass tourism due to their limited sizes.
