Small group family vacation

This is a 'small group family adventure' - typically you will join several other families traveling in a group of up to 20 people (3-5 families). The trips are great value, often with lots of included activities or sightseeing and some meals (dependent on the itinerary). They are created by people with families, for people with families, and are a great way for you and your children to meet new people and discover the world together! While itineraries are pre-planned there is some flexibility and you'll have plenty of time to yourselves.

On these Family Adventures, families of two will be roomed in a twin room, parties of three will be roomed in a triple room, fours will be roomed in two twins and families of five will have a triple and a twin, etc. This operator tends to use small, locally owned properties throughout their trips and accommodation will be en suite unless specified otherwise. It will be clean, functional, well located for your adventures and most importantly, family friendly. There will be swimming opportunities nearby where ever possible, either in pools or the sea. Some trips contain more adventurous overnights such as jungle stays, camping in the desert, sleeping on deck of traditional style boats or a night in a local homestay – please be aware that facilities will be basic on these occasions if your trip contains these aspects. All accommodation is named prior to travel.

Please check with the operator to confirm the minimum age for this trip.

Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Japan family vacation

As adventure travelers we relish and celebrate the diversity of all corners of the world, along with acknowledging our obligation to protect the environments that we explore. Our aim is to tread lightly, designing and operating vacations which maximise the positive effects of tourism on local economies, cultures and the environment whilst minimising any negative impacts. We aim to engage all our customers in utilising the potential of tourism as a tool to aid sustainable development. We believe that responsible travelers are always welcome the world over.

We travel in small groups (max 3-5 families) so have a minimal impact on the environment as we go. We work hand in hand on this itinerary with our local operator, who employs on our behalf local group leaders, drivers and the local site guides we use throughout the itinerary, creating vital local employment. We stay in locally owned guesthouses and hotels, eat in local restaurants and source supplies en route as we travel, ensuring that as much of the money as possible spent operating this trip finds its ways back into the local communities which we are visiting.

We only use local group leaders whom we regularly train and work closely with to ensure that they are fully engaged in ensuring travelers not only have a fantastic vacation, but also that they have the tools to help our passengers understand the nature of the environment we are passing through and know how to minimise the impact that they have. This includes everything from where to buy souvenirs and supplies locally to taking all rubbish with you, leaving nothing behind. Not only does more of the money we generate stay within the communities we are visiting, but the specialised local knowledge and expertise of our guides gives our travelers a unique experience.

Throughout this trip, the group will travel on local buses, trains, boats and trams, plus two nights are spent at a ryokan - Japanese style accommodation with Japanese style food and thus a very traditional experience! There’s the chance to visit traditional markets in Tokyo, and an overnight stay in a temple provides direct income to the monks who run it; an important financial resource for those involved, that provides us with a unique experience.

It’s inescapable that flying to destinations involves burning fossil fuels, therefore increasing carbon emission. We work with The Carbon Neutral Company, offering all clients the opportunity to offset their international flight emissions. The Carbon Neutral Company work with projects all over the world from community schemes to environmental initiatives, all designed to make lives a little better. We also contribute £2 per person towards offsetting every client’s in-country travel. We fully offset all emissions from our staff travel and run an energy efficient office.

We have a foundation that collects the funds that you donate to us to support our projects. All our customers are invited to make a £1 per person contribution to the foundation at the time of booking. We will match every contribution that you make with our own £1. Every quarter all contributors are invited to vote on a shortlist of nominated projects – so it really is YOUR foundation

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

a) Our guide, Silvia, recommended a garden (Happo-en) in Tokyo to visit on our free day - the trip there and the garden were great fun, we all enjoys the blossom and chatting to brides having their photos taken with the magnificent blossom as a background.

b) having our picture "printed" onto top of our coffee/ baby chin no's at Ginza shopping was amazing highlight.

c) Sushi breakfast was amazing - Silvia took us to a very special place for this authentic experience -the down side is that Sushi will never ever be as good as this experience!

d) Seeing Mout Fuji and a real volcano eating black eggs at the top.

e) getting to Okouchi Sandi Garden very early before all the other tourists - the garden was very tranquil and still had some blossom - it felt good to leave before the tourist crowds arrived via the bamboo forests. Extra special mention must go to Silvia who helped minimise the cultural gap for us, she really helped us to feel at ease in Japan, our flight was delayed and with the change of hotel we missed the welcome meeting - we still hit the ground running on day one and achieved so much in our first 24 hours - we doubt this would have been possible without Silvia!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Think about packing light for the guest house break - slippers, robes and pyjamas are all supplied at the guest house so only need change of clothes for everyone!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Fantastic family experience, our children enjoyed other kids on the adventure with them, we walked more and packed lots into each day!
