Responsible tourism
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your vacation will help support conservation and local people.

During this trip we will spend nine nights in 4-star hotels including Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort & Spa. This is an eco-luxury resort that focuses on sustainable practise by recycling wasted water and producing organic coffee. The requirement of shadow trees on this plantation has seen a variety of birds and an increase in numbers due to the ‘no hunting’ policy.
Where meals are provided, local produce will be used where possible so that guests can experience traditional Balinese dishes. Where meals are not included, our expert guides will encourage guests to visit local cafes and restaurants to try out additional authentic specialities. By doing this, guests are directly helping the community by financially supporting small businesses.
Environment & activities
We begin this trip with a yoga class which is an integral part of Indonesian culture, allowing guests to relax and get into the Balinese frame of mind. On day three we visit a local market and pick up a range of produce including meats, spices, vegetables and seafood before taking part in a cooking school surrounded by rice paddies. Here we will learn how to cook authentic dishes of Bali by experts for lunch.
On day four, we’ll spend a few hours ascending an active volcano; Mount Batur and see the lava field surrounding the volcano, before trekking across the black lava sand. We are very conscious of our effects on the environment and where possible we choose to avoid damaging methods of transport, and instead walk to keep emissions down.
We also visit the island of Nusa Lembongan and will have the opportunity to snorkel and explore life in the natural coral reefs offshore.
Group Size:
This is a small group tour, meaning that we have a low impact on the environments and communities we visit and are able to ensure that we do not disrupt or lead to the displacement of local people.
UK Office:
It all starts at home where we work towards reducing our carbon footprint in our offices through engergy conservation measures, recycling policies and the promotion of cycling and walking as a means for our staff to commute. Our head office has become a plastic-free zone with the use of plastic bottles being banned in our head office and we distributed reusable water bottles and tote bags to every staff member. We also support a large number of community and environmental projects in different parts of the world and try to give something back to the places we visit.
The Impacts of this Trip
Community & culture
By attending the group meal on the first night at Hujan Locale, guests are directly supporting the local community, as this restaurant serves street-food inspired dishes, made from ingredients sourced by local farmers and the restaurant’s kitchen garden. We take a vintage Vespa ride for dinner and enjoy authentic foods with a local family, presenting an opportunity to learn about each other’s cultures, followed by a Legong Balinese traditional dance performance.
We visit the John Hardy showroom (an artisan jeweller) and have a tour of his workshop, which is derived from his eco-principles. Hardy has adopted ancient techniques to craft high-end pieces from the 400-acre design center. Provisions can be purchased here which would support the work and upkeep of the shop.
One of the highlights for many on this trip is the 15km bike ride through the UNESCO-listed rice terraces, here we will learn about the unique irrigation systems and growing techniques used. And on our final night we’ll watch a traditional Kecak dance.
A Fair Deal:
We work closely with our local operator and ensure that all of our guides are local and that in exchange for their expertise that they are paid and treated fairly. Our leaders will brief guests on Responsible Tourism issues to help clients understand how they can help reduce their impact on the environment and maximise the benefits to the local community from our visit.
