5 out of 5 stars

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?
The doable yet challenging (for me) walks combined with cultural learning. Experiencing the remote villages, lifestyle and food in local accommodation. Sharing it with two terrific guides and a small group of companionable people.
2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?
Pack light, take a hat and a good pair of boots and be prepared to soak up a the traditional culture and the magnificent vistas Romania has to offer.
3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
I would like to think it did via the local accommodation etc.
4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
Wonderful. Exceeded my expectations. In particular, the English guide Carly Fillis, really encouraged and supported my participation in all the walks and worked effectively as a team with the knowledgeable local guide, Smaranda.
Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
We have a strict environmental policy to make sure that the environments we visit are not damaged or spoilt in any way. All our guides are trained to uphold this policy and all clients are fully briefed on appropriate/responsible behaviour whilst in wilderness areas. Our “Leave No Trace” ethic is applied to all trips in all regions, and as tour operators is something we are careful to promote.Portions of this trip travel through National Parks - again, by encouring low impact tourism in these areas it allows the designated parklands to generate revenue and ensure they are kept 'unspoilt' for generations to come.
People
In Romania we use local ground handlers who in turn book locally run hotels, providing employment for a number of members of staff and support families. The ground handlers also use local drivers and camp staff, and ensure that all supplies are purchased locally for the journey. This means that all the operational costs go directly into the local economy, and benefit the local community. In each area we employ and develop close relationships with drivers, staff and guides. We feel the interaction between our friends and our clients offers both parties a valuable understanding between cultures. This is of particular importance in areas where there are limited employment opportunities - by working with local people and communities we are able to extend tourism in Romania away from the more commercial centers and into the more remote regions.
We also support several NGOs around the world such as the Hope Foundation, A-Cet and Adopt-A-Minefield, which are all carefully selected to improve the standard of living for the communities we visit. In 2009 we also launched our own charitable foundation which allows us to channel profits from the trips and fundraising events, directly into community projects in the countries we visit. Details of current projects and scholarships supported by the foundation are available on request.
