Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Andalucia walking vacation, Autumn in Spain

Environment

To save water we use hotels that encourage guests to reuse towels for a few days.
We expect guests to bring their own water bottle, flask or camelpack to use as the springs in the Sierra Nevada and Las Alpujarras is mainly drinkable and excellent quality. We also explain to guests the local water systems that are 1500 years old, how they work and how and why they are changing them to alternative methods of irrigation for the preservation of water.
We also actively explain to customers the reasons for not buying cheap and perfect, fruit and vegetables in the north of Europe as it is not good for our water or environment in Spain. How the plastic greenhouses are using the water table in the Sierra Nevada.
The hotels we use have swimming pools which are effectively reservoirs that hold water for a certain amount of time before it is recycled with fresh water and the water in the swimming pool is untreated so it can be used on local vegetable and fruit.

Community

We run a tourism business and we appreciate that this is a large employer in some of the villages and for us to keep running rural vacations we need to support our local communities. Encouraging the use of traditional ways of farming, building and cooking.

We believe in supporting the local communities and crafts people, this is integral to the region and to our walking vacations. During the Autumn Special week we shall have the opportunity to visit a local leather workshop in Capileira, one of the first villages we stay in. On the first days walk we shall walk through Pampaneira and have the opportunity to visit several other local craft workshops.
We shall also visit local artists as we pass there galleries through out the week.
At the last hotel Alqueira De Morayma we will be sampling the hotels own organic wine and cheese.
This is all important in keeping local traditions alive and we encourage clients to buy the local products to help keeping it that way.
