Supporting local traditions
Sri Lanka has a long history of crafts, especially textiles. According to our history, when Prince Vijaya, the founder of Sri Lankan civilisation, arrived on the island in the sixth century BC, he found Princess Kuweni spinning cotton as he stepped ashore.

You can see the work of a Dumbara fabric weaver, bobbin lace makers, basket makers, woodcarvers and mask painters. They are all very happy to let you watch them at work, and you can even have a go yourself and take part in the crafts lessons for a small fee to cover the cost of materials. If you’re interested in this, register in the crafts shop.
