Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Amalfi Coast small group vacation, Italy

Environment

Since the Amalfi coast local living trip is an active level 3 hiking trip , we have the chance to experience nature to the fullest, there isnít much of a wildlife other than different kind of birds and foxes , non poisonous snake, we get to see a lot of goats .
Our first stop is in Naples , one of the dirtiest city in Italy( there have been several problem in past years regarding rubbish) . I suggest passenger to try and be as sustainable tourist as they can , with simple tips as re-using plastic water bottle, refill them as in Italy water is totally drinkable, I show them that also our agriturismo in Furore use water filter , so glass bottle during dinners are filled in that way .Short shower also helps , so far in south of Italy has been a wet season, but usually during summer water shortage could happen.
The agriturismo in Furore is an old monastery converted to agriturismo in recent years, It has a lot of history behind it .Monks In 1400 were very clever and they built a well inside the building, still to these years these water wells works, only three months out of the year but the owners have created a storage water cistern in the basement next to the old wine cellar in order to use the water for the fields around the house.
In addition to that they didnít ripped off the history behind the building , but the left and restored it as much as they can of the old monastery, such as ceramics tiles, original door, small frescos. Passenger sleep in the old monks room.
Food served is mainly food that they personally grow , like grapes and wine from vineyards , olive oil, jams , fruit and vegetable, eggs from chickens. Meat and mozzarella come from relative in the next town, that own business so food transportations, pollution are reduced to the minimum.
During free day I encourage passenger to take local transportation and if they wish to take a day trip to Capri island to use public boats, which are also cheaper than private tours.

Community

One of the most matter in Italy is the crisis that has been going on for the past 3 years.
I Talked about the matter as also my passenger are asking questions. I advise them to buy locally and handmade crafts such as Limoncello and local wines like Aglianico or Falanghina IGP or DOCG , these two last name I mentioned mean that The origin of the product is certified and local and passenger are sure on what to buy .rather than imported lousy t-shirts.

Ceramics are also typical of the region, I help passenger recognizing what is made local rather than what looks like is imported and not locally made.

We never have the chance of visiting a local market but I suggest passenger that are extending their vacation in the area after our trip to visit them if they have the chance and the best deal are made there for what concern fruit and vegetable but also clothing ( Italian market are very well know for their clothing stalls.
When I met passenger in Naples I welcome them with a lemonade drink during welcome meeting speech, after all is a local living and food experience so itís better to start right away!!

During transfer from Pompei to Furore we stop several times to take pictures of the breathtaking view instead of doing just a boring transfer by van, Itís also a chance to start to know a little bit better the passenger and see what they are interested in .

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

We enjoyed the group and hikes. The accommodations were very good. The
towns visited and views were great. The boat trip to Capri was special. We
definitely saw and experienced the Amalfi Coast! Great trip.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be prepared to do some walking and climbing while hiking. We averaged more than 14,000 steps per day. It was worth it. Bring good walking shoes, walking sticks, light day pack to carry water, etc. the weather temperature changes from morning to afternoon, so plan on layers of clothing. Euros are preferred. ATMs are scarce. Credit cards not accepted by the smaller vendors along the streets of the towns. Sorrento is the best place to buy your Amalfi Coast souvenirs (pricing and variety).

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Staying at an Agritourism facility was unique and well done. The local family
was a joy to be around. The food was healthy, very good and plentiful.
Enjoyed the two cooking demonstrations as well. A lot of fun.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Exceeded our expectations. Will do another tour with this company. Great value.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The Walk of the Gods and the people I met on this tour.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Bring a bathing cap!! You are not allowed to swim in the pool without one which I thought was strange coming from Australia. They do supply them though. Be fit, the walking is sometimes very strenuous and many steps. Not a tour for the beginner.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, our guide was alway on the look out for rubbish and taking it back with her on our hikes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

This was a wonderful trip, the hotel was nice, larger than I thought and the quality of the rooms seemed to differ quite a bit. The food mostly was good but the owners are working to a budget so keep this in mind.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The day on the farm learning about how the lemon farm operates and how to make limoncello and having a go at making our own pizzas in the family oven. My husband would say the best part was the home cooked food - amazing every night!
Our guide Elisabetta was also fantastic and made everyone feel welcome and went over and above in looking after us - especially when my husband got sick.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Breakfast is basic, recommend bringing a few cereal bars if you like a big breakfast. Also bring copious amounts of bug spray - as a few of us received a few nasty mosquito bites :)

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes we did - us staying at the aguriturismo means that the family can continue to work on the farm using traditional methods.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was fantastic, we learnt a lot, walked down a lot of steps and ate the most wonderful homemade food.
