1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

It was all fabulous but real highlights were our guide Nui, the cooking class in Chiang Mai and the wonderful temples everywhere

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Skip Lopburi, not worth it and thus avoid the long drive to Shukothai. Spend more time in Chiang Mai, it is worth it and go all inclusive for the beach part!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes I did. We planned it so that we always stayed in locally run hotels (apart from BKK)

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

it was really wonderful

Responsible Travel

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.

Planet

Your Thailand vacation starts with an exciting tour of Bangkok with a local guide. Wayfairer employs local guides as this provides economic benefits to local people, and it offers our client’s a truly local insight into the places they visit. On your city tour of Thailand’s chaotic capital you’ll travel like a local using various modes of transport including klong (canal) boat, the Chao Phraya River public ferry, public bus, and the elevated BTS or Skytrain – not only is this more environmentally sustainable than driving in a private car or minibus, it also offers a more interesting and authentic travel experience.

On this itinerary you’ll spend a day at Elephant Nature Park, one of the best centers for rescued and retired elephants in Thailand. This renowned elephant sanctuary provides a safe environment for these majestic creatures to live in, as well as contributing to their welfare and development. During your visit you’ll meet rescued elephants and learn their names and stories, and most importantly you’ll see elephants enjoying their freedom! Elephant Nature Park puts great emphasis on ethical practices and, unlike many other elephant parks in Thailand, visitors are not permitted to bathe or touch the animals, however there are still plenty of opportunities to interact with them, including feeding them! Your visit to the Elephant Nature Park helps to improve the lives and conditions of elephants.

People

On this vacation you’ll explore the mountainous region of northern Thailand and you’ll have many opportunities to interact with the hilltribe people and gain an insight into their unique lifestyle and customs. This can be an enriching travel experience, however it is important to be culturally sensitive when visiting hilltribe communities in this region. We ask our clients to respect the cultural customs and mores when visiting the villages, for example you should dress modestly, you should be discrete and polite, and you should try not to be too obtrusive. You should show appreciation and respect for the hospitality of the people whose villages and homes you’re visiting, and you must remember that these are real people with getting on with their real lives, therefore you should take care not to invade their privacy or interrupt their daily schedule.

Photography is a sensitive issue among the hilltribe communities and your local guide can give you further information about the protocol. However, you should never photograph anyone without their consent. If you wish to take a photograph of someone it is best to ask your guide if they can request permission or you can use gestures to show that you wish to take their picture, but if they indicate that they do not want you to, please respect this.
When visiting these remote villages there will be opportunities to buy authentic handmade products, such as embroidered bags and silver jewellery, and if you choose to purchase anything you’ll be providing an additional source of income for the families here, as well as helping to preserve traditional hilltribe arts and crafts.
