Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Sweden vacations, self guided canoeing

Environment

All our trips are about enjoying and experiencing the natural and cultural beauty of the region, in a respectful and considerate way. Our trips are only run with small groups, most often from two people to four people, to ensure that impact on the environment is a minimum at all times, and the most personal and rich experience can be had by all.

We are a member of the Svenska Ekoturismföreningen (Swedish Ecotourism Association) which works towards an improved tourism which protects and takes responsibility for our delicate natural and cultural environment. Our company beliefs reflect this vision.

As our trips are self-guided, we make extra efforts to provide travelers with as much information about the local area as possible, including information about bird, animal and plantlife as well as historical and cultural information. This ensures that, even without a guide, we can inform travelers about the region. With additional knowledge, travelers can go one step further to protecting the environment.

We take responsibility of ensuring that rubbish is handled accordingly. both in the countryside and in the office, with a developed sorting system. Use of paper is spared with all marketing made online to avoid the production of own brochures. Travelers are encouraged to recycle as much literature as possible that they are provided with at the start of the trip.

Community

We wholeheartedly support the local economy - our guests want to experience the genuine region in which they are traveling, and our aim is to let it be seen and enjoyed.

Encounters with the locals is a fundamental aspect of our trips, and we therefore make all efforts to use suppliers from the area. With this aim in mind, we ensure all meals are provided from local suppliers with a commitment to using local produce. Where meals are not provided, we encourage travelers to visit locally-owned restaurants, take extra day trips, etc.
We prefer to use accommodation that is smaller and more personal which allows an insight into the local community. Where possible, we use local suppliers (e.g. boat and canoe suppliers). Our aim is always to promote and support the local community.

Our trips are designed so that travelers pass by cultural and historical sites en route, and information is provided about these sites. Travelers are encouraged to visit or take guided tours, and all opening times of sites, shops, facilities are indicated to allow the traveler the opportunity to maximise their visit.

We have also supported the local community by providing translation services of local websites to help encourage tourism from abroad.

Our trips would quite simply not be the same without the support of the local community.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Paddling through the quiet part of the lakes with no other people. Fantastic to be in the EU but so in the wild.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Make sure you understand the length of the entire trip in the canoe. There is quite a bit of paddling each day and if the wind is blowing against you it's tough.

Not enough safety advice about canoeing if you have never been before. (We had very strong winds that pushed into the side of the lake and we had to
abandon the canoe and walk to the road then call for assistance)

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes it benefitted local tourism business and reduced environmental impact. Not sure it supported conservation. There needs to be more explanation about
this by the organisers and guides.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Very good experience to discover this area. Would do things differently when we come back but would for sure come back again.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The canoeing was fabulous - especially the first day in the narrow, Marviken lakes. Going through the tunnel that connected two of the lakes was especially
exciting for our 5-year old. The rivers connecting the wider lakes were also very memorable, as was the camping by Lake Klammingen (especially with all the
marvellous food that Carmen provided).

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

1. If you have a waterproof case for your camera then take it. We didn't; but kept our camera in its case, and put this inside 2 carrier bags - it was protected,
but easily accessible.
2. A dry bag is good too as you do get some water in the canoe. I wouldn't go out and buy one- just take some bin bags with you.
3. The times on the water are very generous - we were doing about 1 km per 15 minutes without really trying. However, some of the transitions take some
time: wheels are provided to help move the canoe and this is all factored in to the route. This gives you time to enjoy the scenery, picnic and do a little
swimming (the beaches at the bottom end of the 2 bigger lakes are good).
4. At Mariefred, the castle (Gripsholm) is definitely worth a visit (as was dinner at Gripsholm Vaardus - the hotel by the front).
5. In Stockholm the Vasa museum is outstanding.
6. We extended our stay in Stockholm at the end, which Carmen also kindly arranged for us: it is such a beautiful city it is definitely worth doing (if time
and money allows).`

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Definitely. All the transport used was public, and the hotels and B&B's were local run, independent outlets. The Stockholm hotels (Rex and Hellsten) were
particularly good.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Absolutely fabulous and brilliantly organised by Carmen and company - nothing was too much trouble (re-arranged the dates slightly due to a local wedding
affecting hotel availability). Although only a relatively short time, we felt we got to see a real snap-shot of Sweden and some of the beautiful places (and off the
usual tourist track).
