Carbon reduction

Your vacation will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this vacation and how to reduce them.

Environment

We are committed to offering low impact tours that benefit both the places and communities we visit as well as our travelers. It is important for us all to be aware of the delicate balance that exists in the variety of natural wonders you will visit. National Parks and monuments, archaeological sites and other sensitive areas should and must be treated with respect.

We have created a 'Travelers' Code of Conduct' to help prepare and inform our groups of the various positive or negative effects they could have on a destination. The code includes tips on everything from handling wildlife encounters to how you can help to conserve precious natural resources. Our tour leaders will explain this code of conduct during the first night’s orientation talk and encourage you to follow it throughout the tour.

This code includes following the ‘Leave No Trace’ ethic, this is an international campaign that is designed to help us minimise the impact on the National Parks and other wilderness areas that we visit. Some key guidelines we follow include keeping to existing trails and disposing of all waste responsibly and recycling whenever possible.

We are proud supporters of the American Hiking Society, which champions conservation issues in the United States and represents millions of hikers committed to preserving America’s vast network of hiking trails and their surrounding ecosystems.

All water is safe to drink from the tap on this trip and we advise customers to bring a reusable water bottle from home, and not buy single use plastic bottles.

This tour aims to dig below the surface of a few specific areas, as opposed to trying to fit too much in or too many road miles.

On this tour, it is likely the group will encounter wildlife when hiking the trails. It is important for our business that our leaders educate travelers on how best to interact with the wildlife. This includes advising people not to feed the animals, therefore making them dependant on hand-outs from humans.

Community

On this tour, we use specialist guides including a bear viewing guide in Tofino and a whale watching guide in Victoria. Both activities are conducted in a small Zodiac boat and at a safe distance so as not to disturb and interfere with wildlife in their natural habitat.

Accommodation on this tour has been specifically selected to bring out the flavours of the area, and not support the larger hotel chains. These include Yurts in Tofino and historic cabins on the shores of Lake Crescent.

Whenever possible, we use local accommodation and activity providers such as renting canoes and kayaks from the accommodation in the Lake Crescent area. We also shop locally for groceries, eat in small family-run restaurants and visit local shops whenever possible. This all brings economic benefit to the local communities that we visit.
