Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Adventure vacation in Nepal

Environment

We take lots of public buses on this tour, reducing our carbon footprint. When we visit local villages which rarely see westerners, our tour leaders make sure that our passengers do not leave any rubbish or anything that could damage the environment especially when we stay in the middle of the Annapurna mountains.

When we are in the conservation areas we ask our passengers to buy boiled and filtered water sold by the local lodges. This conserves the water where possible. During the trek, the lodges we stay in provide lunches and teas made from local produce in the area.

Community

We follow an Ethical Trekking Policy when working with sherpas in Nepal. All of our hiking trips throughout the world work with porters who are employed to carry hiking and camping equipment. All equipment carried must follow strict guidelines so as not to impact their health and fitness. The employment also provides a valuable income for the sherpas and their families and offer an invaluable service to travelers in the area.

Hiring sherpas allows travelers valuable contact time with local communities where they can learn about the culture, religion and environment which they are exploring. We ensure that the porters we use are paid fairly and are given enough time to rest and enjoy meals while at work. Not only do the sherpas we use receive a comfortable salary but we also encourage our travelers to tip the porters should they feel they have been provided with an excellent service, supplementing their income.

Furthermore, we also ensure that we stay in hotels and guesthouses owned by the local communities, recommend and eat in local restaurants and travel by local public transport so that money goes in to the local economy. We visit a Tibetan refugee camp where we are all encouraged to purchase souvenirs. All contributions go the community as a whole and work towards integrating them into Nepalese culture.
