Responsible tourism: Highlights of Iceland self drive vacation

Our aim which is also our priority is to ensure a maximum of quality on our trips, enabling each participant to experience a re-centering on his or her personal life. Those short adventures are for people with open, contemplative, active minds, who are willing to take time to discover, feel and meet.

When you travel alone in Iceland or with one of our small group trip we encourage you to follow this basic eco-friendly rules:

- Dont leave waste behind you, take all the rubbish with you until you can find a proper litter bin
- Recycle as much as possible during your trip
- Follow footpaths and dont walk on unmarked trails in order to protect the flora, dont pick native flora even rocks or stones you could find pretty!
- Drink from tape and try to avoid buying plastic bottle. Water in Iceland is really good, use a flask when you go walking and refill it each time, with fresh water.
- If camping dont contaminate, river and spring by using washing product which can contain detergent and phosphate. Try to use organic washing products without chemicals.

In our tours we eat local, as much as possible organic with a vegetarian tendency except for the delicious grilled leg's lamb and the unmissable local fish. We are particularly concerned by offering well-balanced and nutritious meals. If you have a special diet you need to let this now before the beginning of your trip.

In our tours, we work with local suppliers. Most of the places are chosen for their quality and are locally owned. We pay directly local communities and dont work on large scale with international corporations. Its also why we only travel in small groups (up to 12 people only).

We encourage people to buy local products and handicraft, respect customs and traditions, be polite in front of locals and even manage to speak a few Icelandic words even Icelandic people usually speak good English. Respect for local people, their cultures, traditions and environment are essential to our philosophy and we work hard to ensure our groups have a positive impact on the places and people visited. We hope that our clients will be treated as guests rather than as tourists whilst traveling with us.

We are ourselves based in Iceland and work all year round from our office, trying to use less transportation as possible even Icelandic road and conditions make us use engine such as 4x4 to conduct safely our customers. Whenever possible we walk and encourage slow travel by focusing on a small region instead of driving long hours to do the whole country. A lot of our tours are even based at the same place in North Iceland with little kilometers to drive everyday. The aim is to feel, experience and explore places hard to find without possessing the keys instead of glancing over.

We support a local association called Fjoregg and have meeting to make change in a better sustainable energy, wastewater treatment and protection of lake Mvatn birdlife. We also plant a tree for every 2 customers that book with us.

Our company is a family run company specialized in small group owned by Icelandic/French couple Harpa /Jean Marc who are based in Iceland. Together they have over 15 years experience traveling and guiding. She studied anthropology, Kundalini yoga and music and will tell you stories of the world of elves and trolls. She is also the president of the local association "Fjoregg" in order to protect the environment. You will have the possibility to become an adherent and support this association. Jean Marc is a professor of Aikido and Qigong and a Shiatsu therapist.

With them youll have the opportunity to encounter your own nature while contemplating the beauty of Iceland and forgetting yourself in the midst of the elements. Our extensive knowledge of Iceland enables us to offer original tour itineraries for different durations at all times of the year, as every season has different experiences to offer. We think that our trips provide a good balance between the region's well-known 'must-sees' and off-the-beaten-track pearls.

For each of our tours:
We respect the environment, visitors and locals
We benefit locals and support conservations
Our trips are never sporting challenges
We take the time to live, to contemplate
We focus on quality and simplicity in everything
With all this you can listen, meet, be amazed, be present

Guided tours
With your driver and guide youll experience Iceland more like a guest than a tourist. They will show you their favorite spots, and will tell you the stories and legends attached to every place. Tours often focus on contemplation, meditation, observation of wildlife, meeting of the local people and traditions...

Self-drive tours
We privilege eco-friendly accommodations and suggest itineraries that involve as little drive as possible. We try to reserve 4x4 only for necessary trips. Most of the activities we offer are eco-friendly and focus on nature instead of using big engine.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

We absolutely loved Iceland! Every day was different to the previous one - the scenery changed but it was all amazing! I thoroughly enjoyed driving on the roads - we went in September and it was so quiet we could stop at the side of the road, get out and take photos, and get back in the car without seeing another car; a really nice change from what we're used to!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Enjoy every minute! It's an amazing place! One small word of advice - just be aware that the geothermal nature of the country means that in one or two places the hot water smells a bit sulphurous, and it can tarnish silver jewellery (though not irreparably).

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We stayed in local independent accommodation that was environmentally friendly, and the guide we received highlighted the importance of respecting the countryside.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Absolutely brilliant! Jean-Marc was very helpful both before and during the trip (we met him when we stayed in Myvatn), and everything worked smoothly - the car pick up, the accommodation, the excursions - it was a great way to get a taster of Iceland. We'll definitely be coming back!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

We did a lot of things, and enjoyed it all. We did many trekkings that were very beautiful, and since it is such a peacefull land you find yourself very often alone with and immense and breathtaking beauty. Watching the glaciers tongues soo close was incredible. And going to see the puffins nesting colony to the islet of Hafnarhlmi was absolutely great.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Be ready for very different weather conditions. And keep eyes open cause there is beauty everywhere. Always respect the road and path signals.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We did feel it benefit the local people for sure. Respecting the trekking paths and signs helps towards conservation. But this the travelers responsibility. The places we stayed in, did feel like they were respectfull with the enviroment and promote local business, food, etc. Which made us very happy.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It was a wonderful trip, a great opportunity to contact with nature. I very different and breathtaking kind of nature. You feel that the earth is alive, with all that water, lava, and steam coming out of it. The people in Iceland are very friendly and helpfull.
Going during the midnight sun days, gave us extra daytime for excursions :)
(though since it was the beginning of June, it was still quite cold)

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The boat trip amongst the icebergs in Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon. The Super Jeep ride we took from Hella. The Rift between tectonic plates in the Golden Circle at Thingvellir National Park

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Although our car was quite adequate and we managed well I would advise others to request a slightly larger car than we had as we were quite buffetted by the wind on a couple of days. We would strongly advise others to consider paying extra for the boat trip on the lagoon and also to make sure they experienced actually standing or walking on a glacier at some point.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

WE contributed to the local economy via the purchase of food, tours and other amenities. We feel that we improved our understanding of the Icelandic environment and the numerous challenges it presents to local communities who live permanently in this pristine part of the world.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Amazing, terrific experience which was enhanced by wonderful co-ordination and planning by the tour company ......Accommodation, road book and suggested itinerary were all spot on for the first time visitor to Iceland.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Geothermal areas, bubbling pools and glaciers.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Go early to see the puffins, before they go out to feed. Check if an evening meal is provided and take provisions if staying in an isolated arear.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Maybe benefited local people but didn't benefit environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Overall very enjoyable, I would however change the last nights accomodation to somewhere other than a noisy city centre hostel.
