Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Best of Jamaica tour

Environment

As a global tour operator, we are committed to operating every one of our trips in a way that respects and benefits local people, their culture and economy, while minimising our impact on the natural environment.

On this tour, guides will bring a laminated copy of Responsible Travel Code of Conduct to pass around to people. Iteducates on the responsible way of traveling, such as using reusable bottles rather than buying single use plastic bottles, recycle where possible, say no to plastic bags and carry your own instead as well as avoid purchasing turtleshell products as the creatures are hunted for their shells to make souvenirs. On top of that, our leaders are trained to be role models for responsible travel, such as requesting no straws when ordering a drink or saying no to plastic bags etc.

Even though we do not have any projects currently running in Jamaica, the tour leader will always talk through our Responsible Travel guidelines and will encourage clients to look at other projects running in Central America. Currently we have a project for all of Central America & Caribbean called “See Turtles” who are running the ‘Too rare to wear project’ at the moment. The project’s mission is to end the demand for hawksbill products by collaborating with conservation organizations and the tourism industry to inform travelers of the plight of the hawksbill and to educate them on how to identify and avoid hawksbill products when traveling abroad.

We promote small group traveling, therefore maximum group size is 12.This has much less impact when traveling through rural areas, reducing our environmental and social affects. This tour also includes using public transport where possible to get around the country.

Community

We do pay a lot of attention to traveling the way that does not disrupt local culture. We encourage travelers to avoid giving gifts as it can result in creating dependency, also do not visit orphanages and schools as it may expose vulnerable kids to potential abuse and always say no to begging and give back through a local organisation instead.

We support local businesses and use local suppliers for all our included activities and optional services. This means your money stays in the area to benefit the local community and any of the activities done on this trip are helping the local economic development. We only use local tour leaders and an extensive training is always provided for everyone leading the group. Moreover, we have an included tour in Spanish town which helps support the restoration of Emancipation square. The entire historic district is currently undergoing extensive restoration funded by the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) with the work being directed by the Urban Development Corporation (UDC).

On Day 2, travelers will receive a lesson on how to speak proper Jamaican patois, the language spoken in everyday conversation. These skills will be useful in an indigenous Rastafari village, where you will meet local musicians, farmers and artisans.

Furthermore, in order to allow our clients to make an informed decision on where a greater proportion of their money should be spent, we avoid including pre-paid full board meals where possible and we do encourage the group to always eat at local restaurants.
