Responsible tourism: South America vacation, Peru to Argentina

Environment

Buildings – On this tour we predominantly use accommodation options that are located in the historic centre of a destination and are chosen for their local character, so that buildings that are tied to the cultural heritage of each destination remain in use and do not suffer at the hands of large international hotel chains. For example, in Cuzco we stay in the Cuzco Plaza I, a hotel housed in a fully restored eighteenth-century mansion, in La Paz we stay in the Hotel Sagarnaga, an old building with an Art-Deco exterior, and in San Pedro de Atacama in Chile, we stay in the Hotel Don Raul, hand-built using adobe soil and straw to respect the traditional building methods of the area. Finally in Santiago we stay in the Hotel Libertador, which is located in the heart of the historic centre of the city, close to the most important cultural and historic highlights of the city such as the Presidential Palace, the National Library, Santa Lucia Hill, San Francisco Cathedral and the Plaza de Armas. We are proud to help preserve the local character and identities of the destinations that we visit on this tour through using accommodation options that play a part in telling the story of those areas.

Energy – In our administrative offices around the world we try to be environmentally friendly through practicing energy conservation wherever possible. We turn off appliances and heating/air conditioning overnight, we use energy efficient strip lighting wherever possible, and we try to source office and kitchen equipment that has been proven to use electricity efficiently.

Community

A fair deal – On this tour the majority of the specialist guides that we hire to provide expert knowledge on a specific cultural or geographical highlight, such as Machu Picchu or a winery in Mendoza, will originate from the local area. This ensures that the local economies benefit directly from our business in the region. We will endeavour to ensure that local partners are employed under fair conditions, are paid a living wage, work reasonable hours and are given adequate support by our operations team and tour staff. We have a specific policy in place to protect the rights and conditions of porters on the Inca Trail – for example travelers’ duffel bags are not allowed to exceed 5kg in weight as this would cause harm for the porters’ backs.

Friends & Neighbours – On this tour we recommend our travelers to eat out at locally-owned restaurants, to shop in local markets and stores and to try local bars that sell beers made in that country. We do this to ensure that local economies benefit as much as possible from our tours passing through their area.
