Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Trinidad and Tobago small group tour

On this tour, you will visit various bird sanctuaries and national parks, many of which do not normally benefit from visits from mainstream tourism. The entrance fees we pay to enter these go directly to sustaining them. Wherever you travel, you will be accompanied by well-trained and experienced local guides, who are familiar with their environment and are responsible for protecting it, offering advice on how to preserve the delicate balance of nature. They are also of course, best placed to know where to find the various species of birds and wildlife, as well as all the special places that tourists don't normally have an opportunity to visit.

The Tobago Forest Reserve is the oldest protected rain forest in the western hemisphere, with plantation owners realising as early as 1765 that they should stop cutting down the forest. Since then 14,000 acres of central Tobago were designated a protected Crown Reserve. Your guide will lead you along carefully managed trails through this wonderful forest.

You will also visit Little Tobago and there is an opportunity to snorkel at Angel Reef on the way. However, you will be instructed not to walk on the reef, not to touch or collect pieces of coral and to avoid disturbing the marine life. Little Tobago itself is a protected bird sanctuary and an important breeding site for many seabirds such as the Red-billed Tropicbirds. You will be guided whilst on Little Tobago and expected to follow a code of conduct so as to minimise the environmental impact by not approaching too close to the nesting birds, staying on designated paths and ensuring that litter is not dropped anywhere.

During this trip you will be based at three different properties, all of which are located in rural areas close to the local communities. These hotels are the main source of employment for the nearby villages and local people are trained in a wide range of skills. At the Asa Wright Nature Centre in Trinidad all their resident guides are trained in conservation and wildlife and sometimes even sponsored through to University graduation. The Centre is committed to conservation education at all levels and approximately 4000 local school children visit the estate each year. The Lodge at the Asa Wright Centre is a comfortable non-profit making hotel, most of their funds come from their guest facilities and you can therefore help them develop their conservation efforts just by visiting the Centre.

At the Mt Plaisir Estate Hotel at Grande Riviere, the owner with the support of the village community, local artists and craftsman, has transformed the basic lodging into a rustic, eco-friendly hotel blending harmoniously with the surroundings. Most of the food served is grown organically on their farm, which you can visit. The furnishings here are the work of local craftsmen and artisans and are available for sale. Guests are immersed in the local community and village people are welcome to share in the hotel’s facilities. This is where the endangered Leatherback Turtles lay in abundance. At night, Mt Plaisir is lit only by the dim yellow glow of low-watt bulbs masked by wicker shades; candles in the dining room and the light of the moon are the only other illuminations allowed while the turtles conduct their ancient ritual, sometimes just metres from your bedroom door.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Seeing the turtles on the beach at Grand Riviere, watching the scarlet ibis roosting at Caroni swamp, and of course all the beautiful birds.

Newton George is awesome.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Lots of sandflies on the beach at Grand Riviere and generally lots of mosquitos. Good insect repellant vital.

There is a fair amount of driving and the roads are full of twists and turns so take lots of travel sickness tablets if you are prone.

You need good binoculars and a good camera!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I'm sure the vacation benefited local people to some extent and I think the stay Asa Wright supported conservation.

I don't think it reduced environmental impacts.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Every place we stayed in was fantastic. Especially the funky hotel at Grand Riviere. The staff in all three locations were really friendly and helpful and the food was great. Local people were also very welcoming.

The birds were stunning.
