Carbon reduction

Your vacation will help support local people and conservation. We must also reduce CO2. Learn about the CO2 emissions of this vacation and how to reduce them.

The Maldives is a fragile environment. It is more fragile and more in danger than most other places on earth. The country’s existence relies on healthy coral reefs and a moderation of the sea level rise. The Maldives struggles to eliminate all the rubbish produced by over 1 million tourists per year and whilst educating locals in waste management is all part of a large project, as visitors to their home we encourage our guests to support in the following ways and help by leading by example. For this reason and for the obvious difficulty in eliminating several materials, we suggest to bring back the empty containers of shampoo, bath foam, conditioner, cream and photograph film, Reuse plastic bags in shops. We are currently, in the process of designing and producing roll away shopping bags that will be given as a welcome gift to all our guests, with the opportunity for guests to purchase additional bags for us to distribute within the community.

We choose suppliers that match our environmental values. The hotel we partner follows the Eco tourism principles of Sustainability and Conservation, involving Local Community within its activities. Through this sustainability The resort intends to have minimal impact on the local carbon footprint as well as giving back to the local island community.

We recognise local campaigns and organise environmental awareness dives to clear rubbish from local island harbour areas. Whilst on dives, guides will show guests how to view marine life in a way which does not infringe on or damage the fragile ecosystem.

Traveling with respect
We work to create good relationships between tourists and the local community. We respect local customs and culture. We want our guests to learn about local customs and cultural practices whilst respecting local dress and cultural requirements. Our welcome leaflet allows our guests to learn a few local phrases that offer a greeting in the local Dhivehi language. Cultural escorted bike tours on Hanimadhoo allow our guests access into the local community to learn more about the Maldivian culture first hand.

Campaigning for change
We recognise local issues and actively campaign to address them. We have this year shown support in conjunction with our partner PADI Dive Centres by involving ourselves in public awareness dives for various campaigns including, Dive for Diabetes, a condition prolific in the Maldives, Dive for Gaza with all funds raised being passed to the Maldives Gaza charity and Environmental Awareness dives to clear rubbish from local island harbour areas.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

So many things were memorable...

We were very well looked after by our tour operator who made sure we had all the information before our arrival and until the day of our arrival with the airport transfer, and having someone physically there to greet us at Male airport to make sure we got on out last flight. After arrival Ruth from our tour operator was also on hand if we had any questions.

Being driven straight to our room when we arrived very late at night after 27 hours of traveling was fantastic, and hugely appreciated.

Overall we had an incredibly relaxing and peaceful stay. We chose not to join the daily diving trips but instead were able to catch up on sleep, join the wonderful yoga sessions with Mansingh, and do anything to contribute to our general feeling of being "chilled out". Mansingh was one of the highlights of our trip... we had fantastic massages by him, the yoga sessions which we joined almost daily were very good, his encouragements to try a little harder were appreciated, as well as his advice on general health, yoga book tips, etc. He is a gem.

We went snorkeling with Ciara and enjoyed it very much. The bikes made it easy to get around and see the island.

The room was large and very spacious, the huge bed was great, and overall the room was kept well by Hakeem. The bathroom was functional but good.

The entire hotel team was wonderful; helpful, attentive, and friendly.

The food was really good. Great variety with mix of local and international cuisine, super fresh produce, and a fantastic kitchen team!

Last thing. Despite huge effort by the hotel teams to communicate about how to minimise our impact on the reefs it was sad to see so many guests standing on the reef and the remaining corals. Perhaps the warnings can be given in booking emails, on arrival, in the rooms, basically everywhere!

The departure was great. Simple, relaxed and painfree.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Book it! There are not many shops on the island so if you need anything, bring it with you.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, the hotel seems very engaged with the community relating to environmental issues. There is a whole long list of initiatives carried out by the hotel which is very impressive.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

We had a perfect stay. It was exactly what we were looking for. We both work full time in stressful jobs with lots of travel, pressure, deadlines, etc. Being able to leave it all behind and be pretty much barefoot for the entire 2 weeks, enjoying the sun, the relaxed atmosphere, the healthy approach, the sea, the food, the local village, the yoga, and the general kindness of the staff was as restorative to the body as it was for the mind. We thoroughly recommend the hotel.

Read the operator's response here:

Dear Katrina,

Thank you for taking time to write your review. Both myself and the team are delighted that you enjoyed your stay.

With regard to coral reefs, you are quite right it is sad that unfortunately not everyone respects the coral reefs. The in house marine biologist and diving instructors are the first to give many recommendation to guests including the verbal warning “to not stand on the corals”. However, as with all areas of the Maldives not all tourists have the green and environmentally attitude you have even when codes of conduct are shared. There is also a marine biology presentation held twice a week. These presentations are on various marine topics but always address conservation and protection possibilities and opportunities for guests to help. There is even a presentation that is dedicated to the topic of plastic alone. In addition, both the Barefoot team and the Secret Paradise team provide a Green Fin environmental briefing on good diving and snorkeling practices at the start of all water based activities.

Thank you again for traveling with us and we hope we may have the opportunity to welcome you again in the future.

Kind Regards,
