Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Kenya highlights vacation, tailor made

During this trip we visit 4 protected areas in Kenya - the main being the Masai Mara National Reserve. This is home to an abundance of rare and endangered wildlife, and so it is imperative that us and our travelers are aware of the impact that our actions could have if we do not follow environmental guidelines.

Entrance fees play an important part in the conservation of the wildlife and of the reserves - without the funding that these fees provide, it is doubtful that these reserves would exist in their current state and the wildlife that depends on them would be in a more precarious situations.

During game drives, we ensure to stick to marked tracks and keep our distance, as to not disturb the wildlife in their natural habitat. Our travelers are given full briefings by our local guides as to how best to minimise their impact upon the environment, including disposing of litter properly and not damaging plants.

To ensure that our groups have minimal impact upon the environment we work with our local team to ensure that all guides and drivers receive extensive training on sustainability policies, from not dropping litter to ensuring that natural habitats are respected when trekking or exploring the countryside. We also work with hotels and accommodation providers to offer guidelines on how best to have a low impact upon the environment, from water and electricity conservation to responsible methods of waste disposal.

In our UK office we recycle extensively, from paper and envelopes to ink cartridges, plastic bottles and food packaging, with dedicated recycling bins. We minimise our use of electricity by turning off appliances and using energy efficient lightbulbs, and our toilets use reduced water cisterns to minimise our use of water.

When visiting the Masai, we are careful when selecting which village to visit, in order to provide not just an authentic experience for our clients, but also to conduct this in as sensitive a way as possible. We are acutely aware of the fragility of Masai culture and the changes that modernity is bringing to it, so we endeavour to ensure that our presence does not hasten this process.

Where possible throughout the trip where we stop in small villages, we will use the service of local guides, meaning that tourism income filters down on the micro-level to people who are often unable to formally train as guides.

All travelers are issued with detailed guidelines about how to travel responsibly, and are given notes on local culture and customs, so that they are aware of appropriate behaviour throughout their time in East Africa. Some of the different ethnic groups such as the Masai are incredibly photogenic, but it is very important to realise that they may not always want their photographs taken and respect this fact.
