Responsible tourism

As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we screen every trip so you can travel knowing your vacation will help support conservation and local people.

Hamn i Senja encourages environmental sustainability firstly through its commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of the area and supporting the local economy. Senja has existed as a fishing base and location for tin mining since 1800s, but this was to decline by the 1980s. In creating accommodation here, the owner of Hamn I Senja not only utilised and recycled old buildings but encouraged tourism to the area and thus boosted the local economy. Whilst its original buildings were sadly destroyed by fire in 2005, the newly renovated Hamn I Senja was designed to be unobtrusive and in keeping with the local harbour front. The hotel promoted excellent environmental policies, encouraging guests to use water responsibly, using renewable lighting and encouraging recycling. Its dedication to environmental responsibility is also shown through its respect of local wildlife. On whale and wildlife safaris, guests are encouraged to respect local wildlife and see them in their natural environment also.

The Impacts of this Trip

Hamn I Senja supports the local community in encouraging responsible tourism and supporting the local economy. As a year-round destination it is encouraging people to visit in seasons that in the past have been a time which is quiet for the region. With its guided tours, it also helps to promote the history and culture of the region and guests will visit local communities and fishing villages. The hotel restaurant strives to promote local food and dishes and supports local fisherman in serving freshly caught fish. The staff that work at the hotel are international, but there is a focus on hiring local and Norwegian guides who are trained to be knowledgeable about the region and wildlife. The hotel offers good working conditions and a fair wage also.

Overall the hotel strives to create good relationships between tourists and the local community and promote a region of the world which showcases natural and untouched beauty.
