Responsible tourism: Seychelles vacation, Bird Island & Praslin

Bird Island is heavily involved in a number of conservation projects and flora and fauna are now thriving on the island due to the tireless efforts of researchers and the Seychellois staff, which we aim to help. In 1994 Bird Island was the runner up in the 'Tourism for Tomorrow' Awards. Some of the achievements include the following:

- The sooty tern breeding area has increased the colony size from 18,000 pairs in the 1960s to 750,000 pairs today.
- Cessation of turtle harvesting on the island has led to Bird Island hosting good populations of both green and hawksbill turtles. Female turtles are now tagged and nests monitored as part of a wider turtle monitoring programme in Seychelles.
- Rats and rabbits were eradicated. Both were accidentally introduced and had a bad effect on the bird population. This has lead to an increase in the populations of brown noddies amongst other birds.

Whilst we recognise that a vital element of any vacation is relaxation, we do try to encourage our clients to be aware of the impact they have on their destinations. For each booking, we provide notes on cultural sensitivities and our local guides brief our clients upon their arrival. We hope this will help to ensure the sustainability of our destinations and improve the quality of our clients' overall experience, specifically for Bird Island which contains such a fragile ecosystem.

All the accommodation are eco-lodges, and the small amount of people on the island even at maximum capacity mean our impact is small. We do ask though that guests ensure they do not damage this pristine environment. The hotel is heavily involved in a number of conservation projects and passionate guides can lead you across the island for close encounters with some spectacular wildlife. The food for the restaurant is also sourced from the island's local farm, with much organic.

Ethical considerations are also part of our research and development process and we encourage feedback on our practices. Clients are asked to comment and make suggestions on our responsible practices when completing their post-trip questionnaire. In addition to this, as well as visiting destination-based initiatives whilst on their educational trips, our country specialists are encouraged to help continually improve our responsible travel initiatives.

We are committed to supporting a wide number of responsible and ethical initiatives, including environmental projects, community tourism projects and education programmes. We encourage our clients to visit many of these initiatives such as wildlife sanctuaries, local schools, orphanages and co-operatives.

Through client-specific notes in our tailor-made itineraries, we continue to actively recommend restaurants, shops and other local businesses so that the community is directly benefited. Most of these have been discovered by our country specialists and include craft shops that ensure tourist money is fed back to the individuals who produce the crafts, and restaurants which train local street children to name a few.

We prefer, where possible, to use smaller, locally owned ground agents, guides and drivers. Not only does this ensure that it is the host community who are managing and benefiting from the local tourist industry, but we also believe that our clients will have a better trip as local agents have a much more intimate knowledge of the region.

Ethical practice is not just limited to the destinations we operate in. Responsible practice is exercised in our office with various measures put in place aimed at reducing, re-using and recycling resources where possible.

1 Reviews of Seychelles vacation, Bird Island & Praslin

4 out of 5 stars

Reviewed on 26 Jun 2016 by

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Cycling around the Northern-most point of La Digue, Seychelles, and discovering Giant Tortoises crossing the road to hang out on the beach.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

If you want to see the Coco de Mer forest on Praslin Island, visit Fond Ferdinand in preference to the Valle de Mai Nature Reserve - it's less busy and cheaper, and you will see similar things, have great personal service and get far fewer mosquito bites!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, especially on Praslin where there were mostly locals working on the hotel staff.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Fantastic! Little problem with noise from beach parties on La Digue on the weekend, but otherwise amazing.
