Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Iran small group tour, Journey to Persia

Accommodation & Meals:
All of the hotels we stay at in Iran are locally owned by Iranians and the Hotel Akhavan in Kerman, in particular, is a family run property. We eat in a number of local restaurants and normally have the opportunity to sample a home-made meal inside one of the cave-dwellings in Maymand.
Iran produces delicious biscuits hand made in bakeries across the country and we have numerous opportunities to sample some of these. We can sample other home-made treats from ice-cream to rosewater juice and can purchase locally produced pistachios from Kerman in various shops and bazaars around the country.

Local Craft and Culture:
We explore the many museums, mosques, mausoleums, archaeological sites and bazaars of Tehran, Kashan, Yazd, Kerman, Shiraz and Isfahan. By visiting these cultural and historical sites, we are supporting maintenance, restoration and research. Traditional craftsmanship is evident everywhere we go - from intricate tilework, wooden carvings, enamelling, carpets and patterned textiles, to locally produced delicacies. At the bazaars we visit, embroidered products, handmade carpets, painted ceramics, embossed boxes, scarves and jewellery are all for sale. Not only does buying from market vendors benefit local people and celebrate traditional crafts, but it is a cultural experience in itself! (Expect to haggle).

A Fair Deal:
We work closely with our local operator to run this trip in a way that aims to reduce impacts and to give as much back as possible to the local communities. Part of this is employing local leaders, who are committed to responsible tourism and helping to preserve the way of life in their area. The leaders will give a briefing on responsible tourism issues to help you understand how you can help reduce your impact and maximise the benefits to the local community from your visit.

Group Size:
This small group tour has a maximum of 16 participants, meaning that we have a low impact on the communities we visit and are able to ensure that we do not disrupt or lead to the displacement of local people.

UK office:
It all starts at home so we have first worked at reducing our carbon footprint in our UK offices. Through energy conservation measures and recycling policies, we are proud to be actively reducing the waste produced and our impact on the environment. We support various projects all over the world to try and give something back to the places we visit.

In depth story review

“We travelled some distance in our minibus through vast, empty landscapes, but I was expecting that, as it is a large country.”

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Every day was better than the last!

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Just go! You'll receive an amazing welcome from everyone you meet. You'll visit amazing historical sites, places of worship, palaces and abandoned villages, You'll relax in Persian gardens with the sound of running water and shaded by trees.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Our guide and driver were Iranian; we ate at local restaurants and were respectful of the environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

What a privilege to have visited Iran under the expert guidance of Ali Asadollahi who shared his depth of knowledge of his country, its people and their customs - I learned so much.

His customer service skills were such that nothing was too much trouble for him, whether it was finding restaurants en route that served food suitable for vegans or arranging for a bookseller to open after hours.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The stunning architecture. Tomb of Darius. Meeting the Iranian people.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Try not to fall asleep between cities. You'll miss so much.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Maybe in the two small villages we visited. Certainly driving around in a bus does not help the environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?
