Responsible tourism: Shanghai to Hong Kong tour, discover China

Environment

In Chengdu we offer a trip to the Panda Research Breeding Centre who are dedicated to the breeding of these endangered animals. During the trip our customers learn about the work done here to make sure these gentle giants don't become extinct and by visiting the centre our customers directly contribute to the pandas welfare and breeding research.

Wherever possible we try to choose more sustainable ways to operate our trips. In Yangshuo we steer away from large cruise ships down the river and instead choose a more eco-friendly way to explore this area. Our customers use their own power to cycle along the banks of the river with a local guide before hopping on to a bamboo raft and drifting down the river. By choosing this trip over a large boat we are helping to maintain the environment, keeping the rivers cleaner and natural habitats for local wildlife intact for others to enjoy as well.

During this itinerary we have included as much travel by train as possible as a more carbon-efficient means of transport to flying. The slower sleeper train between Beijing and Xi'an means you will travel at a slower pace, taking in the views of the countryside and meeting locals along the way.

A stand-out eco-friendly accommodation during this trip is in Yangshuo. You will stay out of town in a countryside retreat which was named by National Geographic Traveler as no.7 of the World's 25 Best Ecolodges in 2013 and were the only property chosen in China. The lodge supports local projects and one of their core values is based around environmental preservation of their surroundings for future generations.

Community

Wherever we can during our China trips we try to offer small, locally-run hotels and guesthouses. A great example of this is our hutong hotel in Beijing, steering away from larger chain hotels we have opted for a small courtyard hotel for our standard accommodation close to the local communities in the hutongs or alleyways of this big capital city. We feel this not only allows our customers to have a more authentic experience but it also benefits the local people and community with income through tourism. We encourage our customers to eat at local restaurants sampling tasty local cuisines from each region like Peking duck in Beijing and spicy Sichuan hot pot in Chengdu and buying souvenirs from local crafts people.

During this trip we use local guides and drivers who have a specialised knowledge of each area you will visit. Using different guides throughout allows our customers to gain a real insight into the local customs, traditions and livelihoods unique to each area. With your guide in southern China you will meet minority Zhuang people in the rice terraces surrounding Ping'an and learn about their way of life.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

We had many memorable experiences on our trip to China. Every day produced a new experience, each different and often additional things that we had not anticipated. Clearly The Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors, Panda's, Forbidden Palace were all amazing, but for me the peace and quiet of drifting down the river on a bamboo raft at Guilon was just perfect after the frantic traveling around China.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Make sure that you have a suitcase with wheels, there is a lot of travel and easily portable luggage is essential. China is a large country and climate very different north and south so be prepared for warm or cold.Take old clothes that can be discarded as you move around, freeing up space for new purchases as you travel around. Only change I would make would to miss Shanghai, as the time could have been spent elsewhere more interestingly.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Certainly the hotels chosen seemed to generally be privately local companies. Local guides were used.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

The vacation was everything that we had hoped for. The places visited and time allocated for the visit was exactly right. Travel arrangements were very good and the people taking and meeting at airports and stations always there.
