Responsible tourism: Central America tour

Environment

Where possible, this tour is operated using public transport (ferry, local buses), meaning our carbon emissions and overall environmental impact is lower. When we do need to use private vans we ensure we select vehicles that are an appropriate size when our group sizes vary.

The Tikal ruins are situated in the Guatemalan jungle, during our visit to the ruins visitors will learn about the wildlife in this protected biosphere with many opportunities to spot birds and monkeys. Our entrance fee goes towards supporting Tikal National Park’s conservation efforts to protect this habitat and maintain the ruins.

This is not the only protected habitat we see on this tour, we also stay on Caye Caulker where travelers can choose to do guided snorkeling over the Hol Chan Marine Reserve’s coral reefs. Local guides share their knowledge of the marine life on Belize’s oldest marine reserve and educate on the importance of not littering on the beach or touching the coral when snorkeling.

Community

We are committed to using local operators, suppliers and specialist guides. This includes staying at locally owned hotels, using local ground agents and guides for excursions and, where possible, local transport. Our commitment to these local operators means we are continually investing in the community and ensuring these businesses continue to prosper.

We visit the Mayan ruins at Tikal and Copán where specialist local guides share their in-depth knowledge of these sites and the ancient civilisations that occupied them and will also talk about ongoing archaeological and conservation efforts. These excursions are included, enabling us to put money directly towards maintenance of these heritage sites and support local professionals who want to expand visitors understanding of Mayan history and their pre-colonial ancestors’ culture.

Guatemala’s population is a tapestry of indigenous, mestizo and Garifuna. This tour brings travelers into contact with these cultures. We take a boat tour on Rio Dulce to Livingston, a Garifuna enclave, spend time in Antigua, Panajachel and Chichicastenango where there’s chance to delve into indigenous artisan textiles, woodcraft and pottery and support these artisans by purchasing from them.

Other optional highlights include the Green Iguana Project, Actun Tunichil Muknal caves where an untouched ceremonial Mayan cave complex can be explored with a guide and the Caracol ruins.

Throughout the tour we embrace local cuisine and encourage travelers to dine in local eateries and try new locally sourced culinary delights.
