Responsible tourism: Family vacation to Costa Rica, 8 day wildlife and beach

Costa Rica is a small country and has a good infrastructure. This enables us to avoid using domestic flights and instead offer our clients reliable shared transfers. This not only makes for a more sociable experience, but also saves on lots of separate vehicles doing the same journey. There are not many places in Latin America where we can do this reliably as most countries don't yet have quite the same level of development in their tourism infrastructure.

It is incredibly important to us to sustain the environment on the trips that we do to these countries. For example on this family trip, we work with Hotel Arenal Springs. They grow much of their own fruit and vegetables which is served to guests. They have a 5 Leaf Certification of Sustainable Tourism Award (CTC), an initiative led by the Costa Rican government to champion and encourage sustainability in the travel and tourism sector. They have an energy and water saving plan, a bio-digester, recycling, composting etc.

We use hotel La Quinta in Saripiqui. This small family run hotel is hosted by the owners Beatriz and Leo. They employ local staff and give them a job year round, not just seasonal work. Some of the staff have been there for many years and have been able to move up the ranks. When Beatriz and Leo took the land on it had been cleared of its natural vegetation for farming. They have painstakingly restored it to its natural tropical habitat.

Tortuguero is mainly known for the fact it's a turtle nesting site, and for its abundance of nature. However we also include a visit to the local village with a local guide. Here guests can buy locally made jewellery and artwork. This is different to the mass produced souvenirs that are found all over the country and means that the skills and craftsmanship are kept alive. In most cases the artist or craftsman owns (or joint owns) their own shop so they are getting the direct proceeds of their products. A note explaining this is included in the itinerary suggesting this is one of the best places to buy genuine local crafts.
