Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Birdwatching in Trinidad & Tobago, small group tour

Environment

On this tour, you will visit various bird sanctuaries and national parks, many of which do not normally benefit from visits from mainstream tourism. The entrance fees we pay to enter these go directly to sustaining them.

Wherever you travel, you will be accompanied by well-trained and experienced local guides, who are familiar with their environment and are responsible for protecting it, offering advice on how to preserve the delicate balance of nature. They are also of course, best placed to know where to find the various species of birds.

You will stay at the Asa Wright Nature Centre in Trinidad, which has become a model for sustainable development and ecotourism projects in the Caribbean winning many prestigious national, regional and international awards. The Nature Centre is an actively participates in the life of the surrounding local communities and all of the Centre’s employees, including the birding guides come from the nearby villages.

Community

We only employ local guides, who we know and trust completely, and do not send a leader from the UK to accompany you on this tour. For instance in Tobago, your guide Newton George comes from the village of Speyside, adjacent to your hotel and is probably the island’s most knowledgeable birding guide. With 34 years experience as one of only two Forest Reserve Rangers on the island, he retired from this position in 2004 and now leads bird watching tours on a full time basis. His environmental credentials are without question and among his many claims to fame is establishing the Red Billed Tropic Bird viewing site on Little Tobago, which was featured in David Attenborough’s Trials of Life.

During this trip you will be based at two different properties, both of which are located in rural areas close to the local communities. These hotels are the main source of employment for the nearby villages and local people are trained in a wide range of skills. At the Asa Wright Nature Centre in Trinidad all their resident guides are trained in conservation and wildlife and sometimes even sponsored through to University graduation.

The Centre is committed to conservation education at all levels and approximately 4000 local school children visit the estate each year. The Lodge at the Asa Wright Centre is a comfortable non-profit making hotel, most of their funds come from their guest facilities and you can therefore help them develop their conservation efforts just by visiting the Centre.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The trips to see the oilbirds at Asa Wright and the roosting scarlet ibis and egrets in Caroni Swamp were highlights, but seeing hummingbirds, toucans and
parrots from the veranda and the sheer beauty of the islands made it a trip to live long in the memory.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

The organised excursions were varied and very worthwhile, especially as the guides were so knowledgeable. However, there was still time to explore alone, so
we were very glad we'd taken a bird ID guide to make the most of the opportunities. The optional night walks at Asa Wright were also excellent. These
concentrate on other types of nocturnal wildlife but were great to see creatures such as land crabs, stick insects, bats, snakes, scorpions, tarantulas, etc in a
safe way. Again, the guides were very informative and knew exactly where to look.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The organisers used local guides and drivers and the Asa Wright Centre is committed to preserving the forest in Trinidad. On Tobago the main industry is
tourism and bringing birders and wildlife enthusiasts onto the island helps to encourage policies to protect the wildlife and the natural environment.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

We had a great time in Trinidad & Tobago and thoroughly enjoyed our vacation. The excursions were all very enjoyable and our guides were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I'm sure we would have seen far fewer birds without them! It was also a nice balance between organised excursions and free time to wander on our own. The only slight disappointment was that the food, whilst well cooked, was rather limited for vegetarians and we were usually given the side dishes with no substitute for a meat or fish main dish. However, the lack of catering for vegetarians is something we have encountered in many other places so was not completely unexpected and didn't spoil our overall enjoyment.
