Responsible tourism: Rhino conservation volunteering in Uganda

We are commited to conserving, saving, protecting and, where possible, rehabilitating the animals brought under care at this sanctuary. The rhinos started with just 3 and have been selectively breeding ever since to maintain a positive gene pool. The ultimate aim is to release the rhinos back to the wild, when a safe location can be found and when there is less of a threat from poaching. When this project started in 2005 rhinos in Uganda were extinct. There are now 20 rhinos living at the sanctuary, a huge achievement over such a short amount of time.

Our company is an environmentally responsible one that operates recycling and reusing of waste products. We also offset carbon emissions in our office (gas, electricity, business mileage) and encourage all participants to offset their flight emissions via a carbon offset scheme run in conjunction with Tree Aid. This means that trees are planted in poor local communities to encourage local people's incomes, as well as to help sustain the environment.

Participants are advised to use hand wash gel that does not require water. We also advise to take care with water. In many of our destinations, water is precious and expensive.

Meeting local needs
Volunteers live and work with members of the local community. They benefit the locals through eating food in the area, renting accomodation, providing work and bringing ideas to the local area. There are campaigns to work more with the local community so that they can come here to see these native animals for free.

Campaigning for change
Poaching for rhino horn and hunting for bush meat both contributed to the rhino population of Uganda going extinct in the 1980s. This project is all about educating people about animals, the importance of their presence on the environment and how protecting them will benefit local people in the longer term. Ultimately these rhinos will be released to the wild, but for this to happen a lot of education is required.

Cultural sensitivity
We emphasise the importance of showing respect for local people and their customs in our briefing material. Participants will work alongside permanent staff, forming close bonds and getting an insight into real life in rural Uganda.

All of our participants receive comprehensive pre-departure documentation. This covers topics on how to be culturally sensitive, how to best look after the environment when in the country and how to stay safe as well as up to date information on the political situation. They are also briefed on how to dispose of waste properly and where possible, to avoid using plastic water bottles as these are not easy to dispose of environmentally.
