Responsible Travel
As the pioneers of responsible tourism, we've screened this (and every) vacation so that you can travel knowing it will help support the places and people that you visit, and the planet. Read how below.
Planet
As one of Indonesia’s most unspoilt islands, preserving its natural beauty and resources is paramount. As part of your trip you will stay in guest houses and eco-lodges which aim to minimise their footprint on Flores and give something back to the community.A prime example of this is Kelimutu EcoLodge, at the base of the Kelimutu Volcano and the tri-coloured lakes. The lodge is located on an established conservation area and serves as a sanctuary for birds and wildlife, plus the native plants and flowers. Solar energy is used to provide electricity and heating the water and the lodge stores as much rainwater for re-use as possible. Water is recycled for use in the gardens where they grow organic food. Rubbish is recycled and a worm farm helps to recycle kitchen and garden waste. A percentage of the profit the lodge makes is returned to further the protection of the environment.
During your trip you will visit the National Parks around the island including Komodo Island and Pulau Tujuhbelas. The entry fee to these parks in included in your trip price and goes to towards preserving these beautiful areas.
People
During your trip you will visit several villages – including Wuring, Wolotopo, Wogo and Luba & Bena. These villages hold true to their ancient customs and way of life and you can see their ancient icons and shrines during your visit. By visiting the village and purchasing local goods such as the beautiful locally woven Ikat, you are helping to preserve the village for generations to come.At Kelimutu Eco lodge, staff are sent on training programs to raise their awareness of environmental issues, but also the further their own skills and progress.
Our ground agents ensure that local people are used as guides, ensuring you get an authentic introduction to the island but more importantly, their wages help to sustain their families and improve their career options. Training and education programs are offered and our ground agents also closely support local charities including those committed to the improvement of career opportunities for women.
