Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Koh Surin NP 4 day tour, Thailand

Our partner in this special region of the world are focused on working towards addressing global issues such as climate change, human rights, nature conservation and sustainable development at a grass roots level. The program we created is in collaboration with the communities in which you will be visiting. We ensure local resources are used where possible, having a positive social, environmental and financial impact. These community-based innovative projects help to foster knowledge sharing, environmental stewardship, and cultural exchange. We are committed to providing local people with a complimentary source of income while still continuing their traditional way of life.

Spend 3 days experiencing a Mokin traditional lifestyle as you maximise natural resources, adapting to living on the water and land. Enjoy an energy efficient experience as you learn traditional fishing and boating methods and sleep under a million stars in a truly eco-sustainable stay when you check into your tented-camping accommodation.

By engaging in responsible tourism in this region of Thailand you will be supporting several tsunami handicraft cooperatives, established in the wake of the tsunami. The aim is to help provide vital income for the women left widowed by the tsunami. These include an interactive Batik workshop, a soap making workshop, a tie-dye making and weaving with the local community class. These inspirational groups prove that strength, determination, and cooperation can overcome an adversity as devastating as the tsunami.

As with all our experiences, we always have a donation which contributes to towards a local initiative. In Southern Thailand, the donation component of this trip goes towards funding a Healthy Eating Program for the Moken people, providing them with greater access to fresh food and agricultural resources. This program approaches this issue by purchasing fresh food stocks while a group of specialist horticulturists are enlisted to help teach the Moken about how to create special vertical gardens that can provide sustainable nutrient rich food to the community year round.

4 out of 5 stars

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

I would definitely recommend this trip for someone who wants a short getaway.

The snorkelling was out of this world. The water is as clear as crystal and the fish are of every shape, size and colour that you can think of, so many of them that you donít know which way to look.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

You cannot do it in less than 4 nights. The drive from Phuket to Kuruburi is 3 hours, so you arrive in the early evening and stay the night there, then 2 nights on Koh Surin, and on the third day the boat to take you back to Kuruburi only leaves at 3pm or later, takes an hour and a half to get there and then 3 hours back to Phuket so you could not book a flight earlier than 10pm. The trip should specify that the 4th night is spent in Kuruburi and then one can have breakfast in the market the following morning .

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

The guide spoke good English and she was very pleasant and looked after me well. Her name was Noon. When we were in Kuruburi she took me to very local restaurants and for breakfast we went to the market and sat at one of the benches and sheíd go to the various stalls and find strange things that she thought Iíd like to try and it was really good. Koh Surin is beautiful. The camp is spotlessly clean and the tents on the beach are normal dome tents, but pitched too close together for my liking, and there were more people there than I had expected, but we were really only conscious of them at mealtimes because every time we went off to see something we were on our own with our boatman and snorkelling/village guide. The food at the camp was excellent.

We also went to the Moken village, and it was interesting, and I do appreciate that tourism brings a lot of money to these villages, and gifts (one man arrived while we were there with a large parcel of medical supplies as a gift for them) but Iím not crazy about walking through villages like this and asking people if you can take their photo etc. I feel a bit uncomfortable, as if the village people are curiosities. However, the Moken men are employed to take people out to the snorkelling and diving spots in their traditional longboats, which is good, and they are very good diving and snorkelling guides, and quite a few of the women are employed by the Parks Board to work in the camp, which is also good. I really enjoyed going in the different longboats and rowing boats and the one with the sail made of palm leaves and was sorry that we didnít have a bit more wind to have a good sail!

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Altogether it was a wonderful mini-vacation and I would love to go somewhere else to have snorkelling as good as that.
